George's

Former Q Bar man George Zhou - voted "Bartender of the Year" by the Beijinger's readers in 2009 - is back with George's, his new cocktail bar. Just 20m round the Workers' Stadium from Chad Lager's Fubar, George's is a low-lit lounge featuring the martinis, mojitos and other cocktails that Zhou made his name with at Q Bar, as well as simpler options like Tsingtao at RMB 15 and basic mixed drinks from RMB 30. You know that care's going to be taken with your drinks here, so take a seat and enjoy yourself. What looks like a wall actually folds inward to open up the entire front of the bar, making the secluded seating by the door a prime spot. There's intimate seating for couples and a larger sofa on the mezzanine level. The long tables that dominate the central area seem more suited to speed-dating than a relaxed cocktail bar, but are fine if you're with a larger group.

George's is a great cocktail bar, one that is an asset to any city and especially Beijing, where craft cocktail culture is still in its (relative) infancy. I'm there fairly regularly and George is always debuting a new drink or experimenting with next month's special. Maybe it's because I am usually there at odd/off hours, but I have never experienced any issues with the service. His martinis are strong and the specialty cocktails always interesting. If it's slow, George is more than happy to talk to you about the world of spirits, and you can request custom-made drinks depending on your personal tastes and sense of adventurousness. I cannot recommend George's highly enough.

The Wait

At first I was really impressed by Georges and their great selection of cocktails. The décor was nice enough and the couches at the front are great spot to chat on a summer’s eve. The problem with places like Georges though is that no matter how hard the bartenders try to make good drinks, if you’re waiting 30mins to get one it’s really not that worth it. Because this bar has found so much immediate success the service has really suffered. If they could sort that out it could become a regular haunt for me.

Fantastic place to relax

I really couldn't ask for a better place to relax after a long week of work. It's still very close to everything in Sanlitun and it usually isn't very crowded. Liquor selection is solid and the drinks are incredible for the price. The only reason why I subtract a star is due to the fact that the music is a little on the loud side for a laid back bar. Best way to mitigate that problem is to take advantage of the patio seating at the front.

Classic cocktail bar

Just a couple of doors down from Fu Bar, George’s gives you another option if Fu Bar is packed. Still in soft opening now, their drink list is short, but that will change soon. Great cocktails and good service. The décor is a little dark and stark, but it has that classic cocktail bar feel. Mid priced.

So Far So Good

I'm a fan of George's so far- the cocktails are generous for the 40-50 kuai price range, and the atmosphere is great. The bar was pretty full when I was there, but drinks were still coming out pretty fast. I haven't had a Q Bar martini to compare with, but I really the drinks I got. Hopefully the service will stay quick and the quality high as more people discover this Gongti Dongmen spot.

Disappointing

I was actually a bit disappointed by George's. I was expecting drinks on par with Q, if not better, and found the martini lacking. Perhaps I got the oddball poorly mixed drink.

I nice plus, though, is that George's is within really easy reach of all the other Sanlitun area places (vs. Q bar, which is a bit of a trek by foot or a cab ride away). Prices are comparable to Apothecary and Mesh, though, so if the ambiance does not improve - the pod white lights on the wall seemed odd - and the drink I had is representative of George's other bartenders' drinks, then I'd rather meet at Q bar, Apothecary or Mesh.

Looks Like a Success

Stopped in a few days ago, and though the bar has just opened, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a hit. Good design - not really a fan of sitting with loads of other people in a big line at the long tables, but otherwise fine - and the way the whole bar can be opened up to the outside is a great feature. The drinks list was still a little threadbare when I went in, but that was just a starter drinks list which will no doubt be extended soon. Prices aren't bad - Tsingtao a sensible RMB15, rum and coke, gin and tonic etc are RMB30 and then more cocktail-y options get into RMB 45-50 - still cheaper than a lot of other places. George seems to be level-headed enough to welcome all sorts into his bar, which is welcome amid an increasing trend towards exclusivity and cliquey attitudes. Wondering how it will sit alongside Fubar - whether the two bars will complement each other or rival each other for the same customers - but I'm inclined to think they're pretty different creatures. The beginning of a new scene around Gongti's east gate? A year ago you'd never have thought it possible, but it looks like that's what we're seeing. I wonder what's next.
