Herbal Cafe 泰和草本工坊
This Hong Kong cafe proclaims its fare as healthful and MSG free, and the herbal teas, stir-fries, steamed dishes and soups are certainly convincing (dishes RMB 10-58). But can dim sum really be good for us? Don’t leave without trying the refreshing mango- and coconut-based desserts. The restaurant at The Village at Sanlitun has fancier decor than the Dawang Lu branch and features large, airy windows letting in plenty of natural light and a good view of the surrounding area.

Dawang Lu Outlet
I frequent the Dawang Lu branch. The food is good, prompt service for me most of the time (prob because I'm a regular customer). Choice of food is ok, but not too wide a variety. They harp most on the MSG free in their dishes, which seems that the restaurant is aiming for a 'healthy food' positioning. Somehow, this contradicts to the environment of the restaurant. I mean, it's stated as a fully smoke-free restaurant but it's not. It seems every customers are free to smoke in there.
It would be an ideal place for family dining if it's TRULY SMOKE FREE!
PS: Btw, the listing in TheBeijinger says it's a smoke free restaurant, and it's not. Some error there.

Reservations Not Acknowledged
My friend and I went there to reserve two tables for her son's friends. We were a total of 14 pax. Though we said that they will arrive a little later, about 15-25 minutes, that's the point in going there ahead - so we don't have to wait for a long line.
The manager f** who greeted us was so irritating - frowns at customers - insisted to give a table to others. So when our guests arrived, we had to wait for another 25 minutes for another table! What a crap!

Deception, lies, and overall garbage.
Small portions, frozen ready made dim sum that you can buy at any store and steam yourself at home. Tons of MSG, I mean literally tons. The thirst afterwards and my friend's headache spoke of MSG poisoning. The meat in the beef stew was the worst cuts of meats anyone can buy.
The Shai Mai was exactly what you would find in the ready made frozen food section at the supermarkets. The soups were way over done, cloudy and had a taste of being over cooked under high heat.
Cantonese soups that are meant to be cooked slowly over a low flame were instead boiled to death for hours obviously to cover up the substandard ingredients and too much water. If a soup is boiled under high heat to extract the flavor, the soup becomes cloudy as at Herbal Cafe. If a soup is slowly simmered under slow low heat, the soups come out clear and savory. This was not the case at MSG Cafe.
I would not go back even if they paid me. The food was so bad, the service so sloppy that I would rather eat at a dive with no restroom than this fake HK style cafe.
I will not go back, avoid like a disease.

Herbal Crap
Wow, I could write a book on how bad my experience here was, but I will attempt to keep it short. Here goes:
1.) Food: Dishes were small and overpriced and doused with MSG as my girlfriend had a monster headache not long after ingesting their vile food. MSG thing would not have been an issue...if there had not been a no MSG sign right next to us on the wall. Food was uninspired, bland, and hell, barely edible.
2.) Service: Despite the disappointing food, the service was the real issue. Firstly, every dish we ordered came 15 minutes after the one before. Yes, they were busy, but it took 2 HOURS to finish a meal, which should have taken a total of 45 minutes. Oh, they also managed to bring the wrong dishes to our table at least twice causing my poor vegetarian girlfriend to wait over an HOUR before she got her food. In typical fashion in China, servers had to be screamed at multiple times to get their attention, so no big surprise there. When in Rome I suppose. The kicker was they tried to overcharge us by 50 kuai by adding two dishes that we never even ordered.
To sum it up, if you are on the third floor of the Village, avoid this place like the plague.

All Hype, Over Promised and Undelivered
Subpar over cooked herbal soups that are served from a Thermos, miniscule dishes meant for Keebler Elves. Shrimp Wonton that had shrimp that had not been deveined yet. Sub Par stews and meats. The Dim Sim had the taste and texture of frozen ready made dim sum. The Beef Brisket Stew was bizarre.
This is not Hong Kong food as they bill it to be. I've eaten at dives in Hong Kong and they were 1,000 times better than HB.
A really sad and pathetic experience, its not a wonder why the place is loved by locals. The locals in Beijing know nothing of food as I am begining to notice.
And yes the place does use tons of MSG in the food. The headache I had afterwards spoke greatly of MSG poisoning.

Same brand with different taste
I agree with Dan! The rest. at Wanda plaza is better than the one at New village. Not only the environment but also the taste is more delicious. The egg tart is amazing ! If you don't want to waste your time to wait and enjoy the traditional Cantonese food, wanda store is the best choice !

The Dawang Lu branch is good
The Sanlitun branch of this place seems to have garnered a lot of negative reviews. I've only eaten at the Dawang Lu branch, and have found it to be pretty good.
The food was fairly light and low on oil, which I like. The dumplings were delicious.
The two main issues are the size of the dishes and the service. The prices are a little above average for a Beijing Chinese restaurant, while the size of the dishes are smaller than average.
The staff are very friendly and polite but a bit hopeless. Today we ordered four dishes and they came one at a time, with about 15 minutes between each dish. We had to ask for the final item on our order three times before it came. It was nice when it finally arrived however!
To be honest I've become so numb to hopeless service after a couple of years in Beijing it doesn't overly bother me any more.
One final warning - you often have to wait for a table here at lunch time. Although I haven't been at night, I imagine it's probably busy then too.

Must be a patient patron
Herbal Cafe does a good job of offering all different types of Cantonese food, but the menu is designed in such a way that it really is a headache navigating through all the items. While the food is decently made, the service is something that may keep me from coming back. The servers take longer than necessary to seat you, you have to ask them several times to refill your cup of water because they either always forget or lose track of which customers wanted water, and they rarely get your order right. Dining here can be a frustrating experience...

It's all about the mango desserts
Took a while for this place to grow on me (and i still find the menu really difficult to navigate) but it does have it's merits -- the dim sum items on the menu are good, as is the congee and wonton soup. It's the desserts (some might call them sweetened drinks) that really make the place -- the items like sago with mango and coconut ... delicious! Extra points for getting it served with ice in the dead of winter (some places will only sell it warm when the cold weather comes around -- it's just not as refreshing when it's warm).

Absolutely Dreadful
I took my friend to Herbal Cafe for a nice dinner out (she was over from Australia at the time). What a mistake! During my 20 minute wait for a table, I was told to 'stand up and wait' so a Chinese man and woman could sit down in the waiting area. After finally being taken to a table, we were told that half of the dishes were unavailable. Nothing appetising seemed to be left.
The night was topped off when my dimsum arrived with a long, black hair wrapped around a shaomai. When I complained, the waitress took that ONE dumpling off my plate, ran off to the kitchen and brought me ONE new one. When I said I would not eat the new dumpling and requested not to pay for that dish, the aggressive waitress spent five minutes arguing with me until she finally gave in...
It's a shame because I love cantonese food, but I will never eat at that disgusting rat-hole again! Herbal Cafe: don't do it.

Nothing Special
I have been in the new Sanlitun shop last night. The surroundings are nice and the sofas quite comfortable, but that's it about this place. I don't know about the soups, but I wasn't really satisfied with the food I have ordered. I have to agree with the other review saying that their claim of not putting much oil is false. I got a "Singapore Style Vermicelli", decent but still greasy, a "Signature Minced Pork Pie", have to admit pretty good, and another dish which I don't recall the name: it had some mushrooms, dried shrimps and some kind of melon in it, under my expectations.
The service? No comment...they seem to be in a rush, but without reason, since the place wasn't full.

Poor Herbal Experience
After reading the poor reviews on Herbal Cafe from other patrons in The Beijinger, I was still optimistic and gave the Herbal Cafe a visit today. Yes, this place is overrated. Poor service is an absolute fact. The taste is nothing to shout about and the outlet I went was in the trendy Village in Sanlitun. I expected more or at least decent food. I rather go Macau Street at The Place anytime of the day.

Avoid
This place is a HK style Cha Can Ting.
I know the Wanda outlet well, and have been something like 20 to 30 times.
For this style of restaurant, the food is slightly above average standard, and the prices are above average too.
The service is well below average, I often have to wait for a long time for parts of the order, and orders are frequently wrong. The machine for printing receipts is often broken, so receipts are not always available.
On balance, and considering the price premium, I generally avoid it these days.

Grease city
So after reading the previous review I thought I'd give this place a go at the Sanlitun locale as its new and I know where it is.
We ordered spring rolls which were fried, but still extremly greasy! They boast about not having so much oil and it was sitting on a small plate swimming in it.
The sweet and sour pork was pretty tasty, but our special fried rice had 2 shrimp on it... that is all. Whats up with that??
Also tried the sprimp wanton soup... I have no idea what that flavoring is but it was not plesant.
The drinks are tasty and healthy and the best part of the meal was our mago and sago dessert.
Its light and airy setting with lots of windows, but not the best service.
Go for refreshing drinks and healthy-ish desserts- not food.
