Hua Jia Yi Yuan 花家怡园

Serves tasty homestyle fare in a swanky courtyard setting with comfortable private rooms. Their spareribs, kaomantou (roasted buns), mala xie (spicy crayfish) and draft beer are popular. Editor's choice for "Best Restaurant of the Year" in our 2008 Restaurant Awards.

Expensive but worth trying!

Try "Budda Jump Wall". The reason to linger is why I am going there. It's like a garden. Everything is clean and around by trees and flowers. Fabulous place if you have sun-shine. Gui Jie one has a bird singing too.
It's a bid expensive but worth trying. Try the duck rolls - rare to get something like that.
They sometimes offer discount as well at noon. Don't go to the Exhibition Center one. I don't like that place- too small.

too popular

i can only write about their location in guijie, which i take is the original place anyway
for many years i have always taken my foreign guests and clients there to eat chinese food which can easily be enjoyed by western standards, and indeed i still go there sometimes in summer because the courtyard atmosphere here in the rear parts is still really unique and really hits it off from a western perspective... and the food, well, is quite delicious for the western tongue, too, which still makes it worthwhile as a show of old beijing for guest from afar...
but
i am definitely not going there anymore without guests from abroad: the prices have been waaaay over the top recently (especially the beer is totally overpriced), while the quantity served in the dishes did not keep track with that price raise, the waiting time increases at the normal dining hours, and the atmosphere in the big front courtyard is getting more and more carnevalesque with rather stereotypical performances...
the place has just been too popular and successful to keep up the quality that they used to maintain before... and thus it goes the way that many other places in beijing go: the value for money ratio is just not worth it anymore...

Chinese Food for Foreigners

Although they have a few locations, I love the convenient Guijie location where you can dine in the outdoor courtyard.

Although the price is a bit higher and the portions are a bit smaller than traditional Chinese restaurants, this is as close as you can get to Chinese food that is suited for foreign palates—they even have a section where they suggest items for foreigners!

I love the Beijing Duck where they carve it in front of your table as well as the stir fried Napa cabbage.

Definitely try the “Jing San Yang” sweet dim sum like appetizer—they are especially good.
