Huanghe Shui Shaanxi Mianguan 黄河水陕西面馆

24-hour restaurant serves hand-pulled Sha'anxi noodles, dumplings, rou jia mo and more. The Gongti location is nicer than the Meishuguan location, but both are great for no-nonsense late night eats.

Hearty, clean and reasonably priced

Huanghe Shui Shaanxi Mianguan (Gongti Branch - I've never been to the other outlet) is never going to win any awards for "fine dining," but what they do offer up is solid, hearty Shaanxi fare that's perfect for chilly winter nights.

I normally go for the nui rou mian and rou jia mo. The serves of noodles are very generous, and the meat in the rou jia mo is very tasty, although it does tend to be on the fatty side, just as the locals like it. The bread is always fresh and crisp.

Although slightly more expensive that the average street-side eatery, Huanghe Shui is also a good deal cleaner than many cheap noodle joints. You can still fill up for under 30 kiua, so it's not exactly going to break the bank. Best of all, the Gongti branch features an open kitchen which allows you to see your food being prepared.

Service and brisk and business-like, but never surly.

Lastly, this place is open 24 hours, making it one of the best last-night options in a city still somewhat lacking in decent after-hours dining options.

overrated and unimpressive

I've heard a lot of good things about this place, at least the meishuguan location, from trusted friends. however, my two visits to the gongti location have left me unimpressed. maybe the expectations were built too high??

The Rou Jia Mo was dry and tasteless. The Yo Po Che Mian too rich in garlic and soy beans but acceptable. the Yangrou Pao Mo scored a bit better but still nothing to write home about.

There are much better choice for Shaanxi food around beijing if that's what you're looking for. But i guess if it's 3:00 a.m and you need a quick fix, this just might do.

Hearty paomo

(review for the Gongti location)

Visible from Gongti Donglu, this small outlet without pretention serves hearty Shaanxi food that'll certainly help during the coming winter. I just tried the unavoidable paomo and roujiamo. The food was quickly served (maybe because the place was almost empty, but that was quickly changed by the end of the nearby football match) and the roujiamo was nice : crispy crust on the bread, soft crumb, not too greasy meat, that one was good. The paomo was not as big as those you can find in Xi'an but will nevertheless fill a normal stomach without much problem. The bread in the broth could be a bit more softer, but it was also surprisingly rich in mutton meat.

Over all the bill finished at 27RMB, a little expensive for a quick chinese food stop but then these are not the common dishes you have in every corner of Beijing's street. The quantity of extras with the paomo (chili paste, herbs, SWEET GARLIC!!) was also more than enough.

Now if they could have an outlet a little closer to 798...
