Kitchen Igosso

A low dining counter more reminiscent of sushi bars than trattorias makes obvious the Japanese aesthetic behind this slim Italian bistro. Run by the Japanese owners behind the late lamented Café Igosso, is an elegant mid-priced option for date night. The set menu is a solid bargain: RMB 180 provides a sample appetizer platter, grilled stuffed squid, a pasta, thin slices of a perfect medium-rare sirloin roast with a side salad, finished with a frothy yogurt mousse tart. The bacon and tomato pasta and spaghetti pescatora were toothsome but failed to measure up to the other dishes. Better was the steak tartare. Mixing one’s own tartare guarantees it’s done to taste and provides for superior presentation. The platter of hand-minced beef, which contains no fat, is carefully circled by fixings, with additional capers and onions brought out speedily upon request. The peach tiramisu is free-form and delightful. The exposed brick décor, delicate presentation and obliging wait staff (who speak English, Japanese and Chinese) only add to the pleasantly muted atmosphere of this Japanese-Italian dining experience.

Japanese? No, just a delicious Italian.

Went with a few girlfriends and had a very pleasant evening. No, there is nothing noticeably Japanese about it, except the occasional clientele and the owner. Kitchen Igosso's regular menu is classic Italian dining.

The food was delicious and I recommend their special flight of wines for 85RMB. The chicken salad for 68RMB was a hit with all of us, as it was quite a fair portion for the price. Even though the fish dish is quite delicious, it would not satisfy an empty stomach, and at 158RMB may leave you bitter about it too.

Minus a star for the service - even though they've attended to all of our dietary requests (and we all had one), i had to constantly raise my hand and keep it up in the air for 3 minutes (not exaggerating) until one of the 4 waiters would finally notice.

Final verdict: will go again!

Great Date Restaurant

I went there last night with my girlfriend. She ordered a spicy pasta dish and I ordered the Margherita Pizza. Portions looked a little smaller than I expected but we both left full. I also ordered a glass of wine, which they sell a small selection by the glass.

Overall great experience, nice decor, good atmosphere, great food and great drink selection. I was especially surprised when the bill came to less than ¥200 for the two of us.

All in all I highly recommend trying this place out. Its pretty small so if you'd like to sit at a table instead of the bar then you should call ahead for a reservation.
