Kuan Dian 宽店

No matter the season, hip youth spill over onto the rooftop terrace of this Drum Tower-area restaurant. Kuan Dian does a very fine original (yuanwei) wing, juicy and redolent with cumin and peppercorn. Spicier options, including the fearsome biantai la (“perversely spicy”), are available, but all wings cost a happy RMB 3.5. Chili-oil mashed potatoes and barbecued scallops and oysters round out the meal, and there’s Yanjing or Tsingtao to cool you down for RMB 5 per large bottle.

This is one of those unique Beijing spots, one of the better chicken wing spots, which is high praise considering the massive number of wing spots that have popped up over the past few years. Things are simple, make a reservation, get a group of friends together, order some wings and other chuanr, some cold dishes, and beer (or other drinks) and you're set up nicely for a great evening. Service here isn't the best and the setting, while interesting, isn't exactly classy, sort of "run down chic", but it's a fun spot to start a night.
