All for fun, fun for all

I'm surprised Lush has been so poorly reviewed on this website. I've been here dozens of times for morning coffee (very reasonably priced!), a burger-beer lunch, or late drinks, and it's always well full of folks. Further, it's one of the few places in Beijing that has the integrity to stay open 24-7! The food's not bad, drinks aren't too pricey, they bust ass to have fun and do wacky evenings, and the staff's snappy and helpful. Compared to the lane of whorehouses and nastaurants that stretch south from this corner outpost, Lush stands apart. The only other place that offers a good meal with no hassle is Pyro's, and they share a big goofy nerd manager/owner (homeboy with glasses, not his full-a-beans sidekick) who's clearly the only soldier on the block who's not trying to 骗人.

Very bad deal

I was living in Wudaokou for 2 years and keep going there once a while and I can say that this place is really the worst place in the area. Fortunately now there more places around, like La Bamba and Helen's. Reasons:

1.Price: completely overpriced. Currently and before. In 2006 a burger cost 25RMB, now it costs 45RMB. How is that possible? Just inflation? I don't think so. On an average inflation of 5% (now inflation for meat is 10% yes, but 2008 and 2009 it was negative) over the last 5 years the price should be now 30RMB. Imported ingridients? In 2006 USD was 8.3RMB/USD and now it is 6.3RMB/USD, so it should be cheaper for Lush to buy imported ingridients!!! Maybe their purchasing people is not so good....

2.Atmosphere: only for Americans. Quiz nights just for American topics, American food and enviroment (except for the poor English of their waitress). But still about prices, I don't understand why Americans are willing to pay more for the same food they have back home....

3.Empathy: have Lush realized how is Wudaokou changing? With the mess we have in our home countries more and more poor foreigners are coming to China to study Chinese but Lush still offers high prices. Euro and USD are not the same as before but their prices keep going up making for us foreigners harder and harder to afford their food and drinks.

4.Competitors: apparently some other businessmen they saw the chance given by Lush and oppened quite a lot of new bars and restaurants in the area. La Bamba and Helen's are great places, with the same food as Lush but with great deals every day. 15RMB small Qingdao bottle in Lush and at the same time 50m. away in La Bamba 5RMB draft beer. Want to know more? Go to La Bamba.

Dear Lush managers: your bar is in Wudaokou, foreigners there have little money. Basic rule for business is to have empathy with the customers. I strongly recommend you the following:

-Review your price policy.
-Not focus only in Americans: remember when Koreans left Wudaokou after the Korean Won fall 30% in 2008. USD looks to be following the way,....If not, in the mid-term your bar will be full of rich Chinese and no foreigners (the real rich people in Wudaokou) or you will end up same as O2 bookstore.

Until you change that, I will keep going to La Bamba and Helen's.

Drinks & Open mic - YES! Food? Best eat before you go.

I came here with a friend and got a burger for 45 kuai, which I thought was a little bit expensive, but i'd heard good things and figured it was a student joint so if they're going to charge that amount of money it should be a pretty big portion. When it came it was literally just the sandwich... no fries, no sides. Really? 45 kuai for a sandwich? Go to La Bamba on a Monday and get a burger with fries for 10 kuai...
Although it was ridiculously priced, It was actually a pretty good burger. However, to add to my food experiences here I went there last night and got the chilli fries with cheese for 35 yuan. The Chilli was quite nice, but there was pretty much no cheese, the fries were luke warm and hard like they'd been sat on the side for a good 30 minutes. They tasted like fries I used to get at high school.
The drinks are, however, quite good. They may be expensive than any of the other student bars in the area, but the drinks pricing is certainly more deserving than the food pricing. The open mic on a sunday is also always a good night.
Overall:
Food quality: 3
Food value: 1
Atmosphere: 3.5
Drinks quality: 4
Drinks Value: 3

Service Fail (& Fix!)

EDITED/UPDATED:

I've lived in Wudaokou for a while, and quite like Lush--it's expensive, yes, but the food is good and the people there are normally very sweet.

However, I recently had a TERRIBLE time there. I got there early one day--about 7am/8am?--to have breakfast and finish up a work project. There were about five waiters/waitresses, and the only people there were me and a table of students sobering up from a propaganda night. Shortly after I got my meal, an older drunk guy wandered in.

What then followed was a good hour, hour and a half of this drunk guy wandering over my table and trying to talk to me, yelling, and at one point trying to eat off my plate/steal my coffee. I yelled at the guy, and tried again and again to get the staff to help me out. Eventually a guy there talked to him, but only to yell at the guy to return to his seat. When the guy refused, the waiter walked off. This continued until the drunk finally wandered over to the students in the corner and I left.

I get that this is the drunks fault, and I didn't expect them to solve the problem, but I don't understand why they couldn't kick a guy out when he was trying to take food from patrons (who had already paid!)

UPDATE:

so, shortly after posting this a manager from Lush contacted me to appologize/talk about the issue--which was very professional and amazing. I was very impressed, and so have raised my review to a four...because while the staff there wasn't great, the management certainly is, and I trust that they have solved the problem. So, good for you Lush--def. saved a customer.

Overpriced!

How can still people say the food here is cheap?? for a 'student area' in 'china'?. This place is basically for americans (basically newcomers) to gather together and prices are set up to avoid students other nationalities enter their realm

Thanks god we still have 'la bamba' to bring the balance to the force.

Really off lately

I lived and worked in the Zhichunlu area for much of last year and frequented Lush. It's expensive but the food was consistent and the service was good (for China). Then I moved, our office moved, and I haven't been back very often since.

The last two times I've been, it's really been off. The waitstaff barely speak English now; today it was a comedy of my terrible Chinese and the waitstaff's terrible English. Even the manager barely spoke enough English to understand the problem.

My problem? I ordered a hot sandwich, and the chicken was cold. I wasn't sure whether it'd been cooked through and it didn't taste right anyway, so I wanted to send it back. The first waiter just tried to get me to accept the problem ("keyi ma?") and only after I was fairly insistent (bu keyi!) was any effort made to correct the issue.

My friend ordered a wrap, and wanted to order an extra side of soup. Usually this is an extra 10 RMB for a cup of soup, but instead of charging him 10 RMB for his drink and an extra 10 RMB for a cup of soup, the waiter made him order an entire bowl of soup. You can apparently order a cup of soup with a wrap for 10 RMB more if you don't order a drink, but if you order a drink, you can only order a bowl of soup. This left me thinking "only in China..."

At any Chinese restaurant, I can experience obtuse policies and language barriers for 1/4 the price. Given the high premium that Lush charges, I expect better.

Not the best

Lush is a good place to have some small lunch while reading a book or doing some work on your laptop in the afternoon. I won't go there for dinner or the quiz any more though.

The food (burgers, some salads, wraps are too small to consider dinner) is more expensive and doesn't live up to the food at closeby La Bamba (love the Fajitas there!). The beer is more expensive (15 quai for a small TsingDoa while LaBamba has 15 quai (down to 5 quai before 7 pm and 10 before 9 pm once you get the free card) local brew pints.

The pubquiz is awful if you're not from the US, at least 75% of the questions is about US affairs or songs that were popular only there. Apart from that it's way too difficult to get a seat. Won't be going there again.

Great Student Bar

Lush is a great student hangout for Wudaokou. Nothing fancy, but the food is good and reminds me of home, the alcohol isn't fake, and it's always a good time. There's a reason that Lush is a legend and that every student in Beijing has passed through its doors.

Sweet student hangout

This place pretty much covers the bases of what you want in a student place - burgers, meals deals, beer, drinks deals, music, goatee-stroking guys with laptops, quiz nights, late hours, nice girls, sociable people. The waiting staff verge on the moronic, but since they're not rude, just hopeless, it's almost endearing!

This was our place for hangout when I studied couple of years ago. Been recently here and am still quite fine with the cheese burger, the place is getting complaints from some student community.
The manager or owner better do something about it .
I still like the place as it has some go memories. The beer is reasonabl priced .

Below Average Student Dive

I saw this establishment termed itself a 'home away from home'. After visiting this place for the quiz one night I think 'the orphanage' might be more fitting. The clientele of general student misfits somehow contrive to create an atmosphere that starts at pretentious, and moves on to delusions of grandeur as the night progresses.

We arrived about 6.15pm and were just in time to grab the last seats available at the bar. The place was packed out with people trying desperately to make a cup of coffee or a coke last two hours before the quiz (8pm) and happy hour (8-10pm) started.

Some food was ordered and service was par for the course for BJ - mixed up orders, dishes not appearing etc... Didn't eat myself, but the chips were pretty woeful and the rest of the food was described as average at best. At these sort of places that has to be expected though. The 'Gourmet' sauce tray ambitiously priced at 30RMB pretty much sums up the whole Lush experience. Has to be said the manager was very helpful and a free round of cakes duly arrived with apologies.

The quiz was the saving grace of the evening (along with the 40RMB ice cold buckets of ale), really well thought out and hosted, its just a shame it's wasted on a place with a crowd like this. Quiz Night purists would be apoplectic with the shenanigans going on - The winning team had ten members with half of them on their laptops, and seemed to have found an extra half dozen points in the 10ft their paper traveled after being marked for the one round they could not cheat on....Aah the yoof ov 2day!

Not in a rush to return.

One of my favorite places in Wudaokou. I like their burgers and ice cream. I have many good memories there. One thing I don't like is the smell of cigarettes.

Lackluster

What is up with Lush? Seriously, they have been steadily going downhill. Food is still good but the fuwuyuan were dumb and now dumber. I had to ask 3 times for the same thing so I just gave up. Mojitos here are a joke. First of all its expensive but its okay because when we went it was buy 1 get one free but the drink was so badly made that I think they should pay me to drink this. It was packed with sugar so it was like drinking sugar with water and a squeeze of lemon juice. Trust me I gave other drinks a try too, but the Long Island Ice Tea was mediocre. Somebody fix this place!!

It works for us.

Not impressive

Not that impressive. Burgers are cheap but the buns come soggy, and a tiny bottle of mango price was grossly overpriced. There was barely room to sit when we went, forcing us to arrange a creative setup of chairs and stools. Nothing amazing, but not bad either. Basically, I’m indifferent about the place. Home fries weren’t very good, although service was quick despite how packed the place was. Probably won’t come back again on my own. But not bad for a quick bite.

Unfortunately disappointing...

Overlooking Wudaokou, Lush was highly recommended to me by friends. However, the food, as well as service were just very subpar. Having tried both the burgers and chicken sandwiches, I have to say that the other sandwich establishments are definitely much better. I suppose the only thing Lush really has going for it is the lower price; besides that, the actual atmosphere is not great, with rather limited seating, and the food is decent at best.

College Bar Just Like Back Home

The owners of Lush found the right recipe for success.

The Wudaokou student crowd love this place. It brings back a sense of community among college students that is commonly taken for granted back home.

The food is also great and the drinks are creative. Just think they could have picked a better name.

My favorite part about Lush is sitting in one of the tables with windows overlooking the bustling streets below. This is a bustling place day and night. The drinks are adequate without being too pricey, and the food is some of the better Western/American-style food to be found on the west side. The burgers are cheap and are actually real, decent-sized burgers with all the requisite toppings but I tried their chili once, and wouldn't recommend it. Perhaps chili is too strange a concept to be mastered? They have events almost every night, like movie night, open-mic, etc. Always something going on here.

Lush burgers are a must

If you're living in Beijing and craving a solid burger in Wudaokou, Lush is the place to be. Although there are (only a few) better burgers in Beijing, Lush is definitely one of the better values. Burgers are only 25 kuai at times, and with the pleasant bar atmosphere and happy hour drinks that's a pretty unbeatable combo. I think Lush is the perfect place to go before going to a place like Propaganda as it's decently cheap, has great drinks, and great food. One thing to be aware of is that the crowd is almost entirely expat, and if that worries you then I probably wouldn't go. However, if China is overwhelming this place feels like a standard neighborhood burger/bar joint, and it's definitely refreshing to go once in a while. One thing not to try: Chicken teriyaki burger--I'd stick with the beef burgers for sure.

ah lush, I got a Tshirt from them

This is the most special place for me.
I met my baby there 5 years ago, and most of our first-month-dates were in there too, we are regualr there, and both have special feeling about this students bar.
Drink there are not bad, and not expensive either, if you get there during their happy hour, should be a great deal. The owner sure knows how to run business, they are cafe and restaurant in the day time, and turn into a pub during the night. Then they have activities each day, like movie night, ope mic... I suppose most students from BLCU or Beida or Qinghua knows this place better then my review.
BTW, when i left beijing 2 years ago, i specially went there , got several "I love WU" Tshirts for all my good friends. The black bar-Tshirt they have actually have good quality and well-shaped too.
Cheers Lush!
