Mako Live House 麻雀

Mid-sized venue for live concerts and other events. It's like a stretched out, spruced up version of D-22, with a bigger stage, fancier lighting, bigger drinks list and an extra lick of paint. It doesn't have D-22's rough-and-tumble punk appeal; it does have a 5-meter high model of Transformer Optimus Prime.

Are they still open?

I came here for the bar and club awards and had a good time. With the exception of the excessive heat, I was excited about the prospect of returning for a show a couple times a month. I've been back the website, which is surprisingly well designed. The thing I don't understand is that their schedule hasn't been updated since August 2010. Are they open? Where do they post their schedule? Why don't they post the updates on their website which, I assume (for myself at least), is the most obvious place to look for such a thing.

pleasant surprise

this easily could become my second favorite place for live music in beijing (yugonyishan easily being the first)
while it certainly does not have the run-down-underground look with the crowded smoky atmosphere that mao or kollegas have, it still conveys a very authentic live-music feeling that makes you enjoy the show more than the general happening: sitting, standing or dancing you can well focus on the live act. sound and light systems ok, design decent and not too "artsy" (even tough i don't really fancy the giant transformer next to the stage but well...), and lots of space (unlike d-22 which has a similar layout) - in general you would come here to listen to the show... accordingly the drinks are nothing special (mojito sucks), but the beer is cold and what more do you need in a decent concert...
ok, the location is pretty far away from the usual music-grounds, it's still easy to find directly opposite south of carrefour, and there's loads of parking available nearby.
the only letdown is their lineup, which simply lacks diversity and it would be nice to see some local favorites every once in a while - but that maybe due to their 'newness' on the scene, so i guess that this will get better, too...

A real hot-house

Overall, I was impressed with this place as a venue judging from our Reader Bar and Club Awards. The acoustics were decent, the interior well designed and the place relatively spacious. I even find the grungy back alley-cum-converted-factory complex setting charming, in that gritty Beijing sort of way. Plus it's a five minute walk from my place, which always garners extra points in my book.

I also give the staff props for handling the capacity crowd relatively well (with a lot of help from our volunteers, staff and sponsors). But to be fair, I can't really honestly judge their usual service or drink selection based on just last night's experience.

However I can say this: They damn-diddly-do indeed need to sort out the ventilation problem. As it was obvious to all who attended last night, this place is hot as hell, even in moderately breezy springtime weather - so they'd be well advised to invest in a top-grade AC system (or at least crank it up).

better DJ please

Mako has one of the best sound systems in Beijing, and the size is big enough to avoid a hard-to-breathe crowd. Started with hosting decent folk concerts, they've recently started to feature more diverse genres, but they should definitely get a better DJ to play background music in between different acts: I've been there three times and they are playing the same four tracks. Finding the place is a lot easier than I thought.
