Mosto 摸石头

Mosto has been one of Beijing’s hottest restaurants almost since the very day it opened in Sanlitun's Nali Mall and remains a busy spot for both a lunch and dinner crowd. Opened in 2008 by former SALT Chef Daniel Urdaneta, Mosto offers inventive, exciting contemporary food with a South American touch - grilled beef tenderloin, duck roulade, risotto with pumpkin puree and goat's cheese panna cotta are among the offerings. The hacienda facade leads to a smart contemporary interior with an open kitchen and bar. Mosto also boasts an excellent wine list and friendly, efficient staff. The popular weekday lunch specials are RMB 80 and reserving in advance is recommended. Voted "Outstanding Business Lunch," "Outstanding Service," "Best for a Romantic Meal" and "Outstanding Restaurant of the Year (Non-Chinese)" in the Beijinger's 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

Usually a Great Place but Just Had a Very Strange Experience

Review of Mosto

I've been to Mosto a few times and had always enjoyed the food had a good experience until my last trip. We went for the business lunch last week and my friend asked me to place both our orders since she wasn't sure she would pronounce the English correctly. I ordered our appetizers and said "...and we'll both have the fish." They brought my appetizer but not my friend's which I thought was odd but it's China so we didn't say anything. Then they brought one order of the fish and my friend's appetizer. When we asked about the other entree our waitress said she had misunderstood and thought we only wanted one order and when we asked for another she said the kitchen was closed and that was impossible. I was pretty surprised at this for a western place. I used to love Mosto but after this experience I won't be going back. There are just too many other food European places in the area to worth risking something like this happening again.

Big big disappointment

a big big disappointment. after reading so many good reviews, i went there with high expectations but it was not i expected.

if do not eat or drink there, atmosphere is good, but the rest is sad, a short menu (I like it when the menu is short, but this is not the option here), very small portions (we had to go to another restaurant because we were hungry after Mosto's dinner), average wines and overpriced menu. If the food was incredibly delicious, prices would be ok, expensive but kind of "it was worth it". But the food is average, nothing outstanding, outstanding is what you expect in a restaurant with such prices. food is average even if don't think about the prices. in chinese i would say: 凑合.

Great setting, continuously good food, recent changes on the menu welcomed

I am going here since it was opened and I is my favorite restaurant in Beijing.

- I like the reliable booking, you can even name the table you prefer and they keep it for you.
- I agree there could be a little more choices on the menu, but the offered dishes are all delicious.
- I love the tenderloin and they changed the sides a little bit, making it a perfect match with the beef.
- Great wines, even by glass thanks to the Enomatic system. I love the Malbec.
- Setting, Music, lights etc, all well chosen.
- No more cloth towels when I went there last week but thats not important to me.

They making a great job there in Nali Mall and I hope they will stay around.

Good, but Some Reservations

Went here on Friday after hearing good things about it, for an anniversary dinner with my wife. The setting is very nice, overlooking the courtyard in Nali building (we were sitting outside); the service was prompt and courteous; the food was very tasty indeed - I had the seared tuna starter and lamb shank main, while my wife (with a sweet tooth) went for the steak main and chocolate souffle, with a fresh orange juice and a bottle of Tempranillo for drinks.

The wine, at 350 a bottle, wasn't great - OK, I know Beijing prices, but when you can get better wine in Jenny Lou's for RMB50, you resent it somewhat. It seemed a bit rough and not fully matured. The portions, dare I say, were less substantial than ought to be the case. When you're paying fairly stiff prices, you don't want to come away feeling unsatisfied, which is what I did. All the same, I can see why this place is so popular, it really does do good food, and deliver it in a fine manner.

Really enjoyed Mosto

Visited for dinner May 2011. Great service and all three courses were good. The listing advert actually says it all. My absolute fav of the night was the vodka creme brulee. Large enough for two to share, but you won't want to! The burnt toffee glaze was perfect and creme brulee was velvet. Heading back again for sure.

Standstill cuisine.

I like the place, and some of the food.
Service is ok.I have been at Mosto for diner and for lunch,
but at the end of the day,i realisez that is such a short menu,
is around 30 dishes in total. And after 3 or 4 times going with my friends i have tried
closely all the menu.
For lunch is a bit worst, as is always the same, every time i go i try to pick different dishes
but there is always this ones around:
Blue cheese salad
Mushrooms soup
The salmon tartar with pink peppercorn.
Of course the tenderloin
And then the chocolate mousse
......................
.......................
I'm going to Mosto for the last 3 months, and i start to get boring for lunch.
They have to be more creative, they are to conservative with this lunch.People like
me are having lunch around Sanlitun every single day.
About diner, is different because i don't go every week, but also after going there 4 times in
2 months, i think that 25 dishes menu is very short if doesn't change frequently.
Maybe i'm wrong but is my opinion. With a menu with 25 dishes, you can keep 1 or 2 every time you change
the menu, but there is always this risotto with goose liver, eggplant ravioli, the chocolate souffle.... this dishes never moves.I understand that by keeping the best seller dishes they are keeping the clientele coming back to the restaurant, but i suggest them to put them on a Mosto recomendations and then have the ones changing every time.At least will be more choices and the also we will enjoy the ones sitting on the menu for long time.
I hope they can read this review in a constructive way.
I love food, and there is something i don't really understand.
25 dishes and then they have 1 risotto as a starter and another as main??Would you it both the same day you go? And then another main is going with rice on the menu...(what means that from this 3 you will only choose one isn't?)
Always using the same garnish, potatoes at least 5 or 6 dishes contains potatoes over 20 items (what mean that from this 5-6 you will only choose 1 too, isn't? then mushrooms and rice.
I hope the chef doesn't come to a standstill because to young..... More creativity !!!

Great food!

If what you are looking for is great food, then come here! I have nothing but great things to say as I have had almost everything on the menu... It is pricey but worth the money!

Good food, but why there is no Chinese menu available ? Manager a bit cold.

Was there for the brunch. Really nothing to say about the quality of the food, everything arrived promptly and the overall quality of the dishes was quite good. Everything was worth the price I paid.

I was wondering why there is no brunch menu provided in Chinese ? I was with a friend who did not understand English and it was a bit painfull for her to choose according to her taste because of this problem.

Finally, she said that the manager seemed a bit "cold" at the entrance, she didn't really have a "welcome" feeling that one should expect while going at a restaurant.

I will certainly try this place again, especially for the beef tenderloin that was very tasty and cooked exactly as I like it.

Go for the set lunch. Avoid the last two tables outside.

The set lunch is a great deal. 80 kuai (or was it slightly more/less?) for a quality three course set meal. Need I say more.

The lighting is dim inside for dinner, so if you are not on a date or there for some other intimate occasion, the outdoor seating may be a good choice; however, avoid the two tables closest to Apothecary, as it feels like you are simply sitting in a hallway, rather than dining in a restaurant. The other outdoor tables are lovely.

The "IT" place to dine

This place is all about romance when it comes to dining with your loved one. Dimly lit ambiance and soothing music. Amazing food and drinks. Consult the manager if you are unsure of wine selection to go with your main course. If you get a table outside, you get a nice view of the whole courtyard from up above. This place is usually full on weekends. Even at 11 there were still people coming in for drinks or desserts. So, prior reservations is necessary. Service is outstanding. Manager came to double check on one of our dishes as we had a special requirement for it. And again, came by to ask how we liked it after the dish was served. Kudos to Daniel and his team!

For the perfect lunch..

It's been often said that Mosto’s lunch menu is great value and here's some of the reasons why. For the entrée, the seafood option is usually excellent especially if there's cerviche . The perfectly cooked main course steak usually causes food envy amongst those who didn’t order it (if not vegetarian!). And then there's creamy creme brulee if you're not completely full...! But remember to book…it’s busy for a reason.

Best Set Lunch menu in town

You will always walk away perfectly satisfied from a business lunch here, not jsut because you haven't broken the bank....the portions are the perfect size and each bite is bursting with some new flavor the chef has thought up for that month. I prefer it to dinner because my only small complaint about this place is the atmosphere. It's not cozy for dinner or easy to have a meal with a group of people as the acoustics are pretty bad and the chairs not that cozy. You usualyl can put all that aside though becasue the food is simply divine.

lives up to expectations!

I've heard a lot about Mosto and finally had a chance to try it. Even with all the hype, I'm truly impressed by the food and service. The beef cheeks were amazingly succulent, tender and to finish off, the creme brule was perfect in taste and size. Regarding service, they did not try to over service us and food was quick to come.
They completely deserve the beijinger restaurant outstanding award in the restaurant of the year (non-chinese) category.

Now, I'm looking forward to their business lunch, which also won the outstanding award in this category.

Food is excellent, but service could use improvement

The service reminded me of something I'd experience at my neighborhood Chengdu xiaochi, where no one seems to care. The servers -- at least the Friday night I went -- could not have looked unhappier.

As a former waiter, I'm sympathetic -- I can't imagine the toils of working in the service industry in China -- and I'm willing to chalk up my experience to bad luck, i.e. a bad day at the office for some fine, hard-working folk. But the reality is, Mosto is supposed to be among the finest restaurants in Beijing -- it simply can't make that claim when it allows its wait staff to have an off-day on a Friday night. Poor service is excusable for mid-priced diners, but not for establishments that charge 250+ for entrees. It seems unacceptable to me that, when I ask for non-60-kuai water, a waitress would half-roll her eyes. Or that the "full" glass of wine we ordered would look an awfully lot like a half-glass. Or that NO ONE seemed to be "smiley," as a previous reviewer put it.

Like I said, I'm willing to believe I just got unlucky. Still, for a restaurant that aims to be among the city's best -- with prices that reflect that ambition -- I was disappointed.

HOWEVER, with that bit of unpleasantness out of the way, I'll admit the food was first-rate. I'll even go so far as to say that the mango-flavored tuna ceviche was the finest appetizer I've ever eaten. You'll certainly find unique tastes at Mosto, which is, I suppose, what people pay to get. What shortcomings Mosto suffers is correctable, and here's to hoping they get corrected.

Strange Service

I couldn't agree more about their great vino selection and excellent food, and of course the terrific set menu at that price.

I know Mosto isn't famous for hosting parties. But when parties of more than 8 people come, they have their way to show their hospitably - 10% service fee for the bigger business. I had friends ate there with 8 people in their party and got into an argument with their manager.

"Would you charge us 10% if we sit at two tables?"
"No"
"What's the difference if we all sit together?"
"... ..."
"Can we have two tables today?"
"No, you reserved for one table."
"But you didn't remind us of the fee!"
"... ..."

10% isn't much for some people, many people. But it doesn't make much sense to some people either. There are many restaurants charge service fee in Beijing, although they are mostly hotel restaurants. But I don't think I have been to/heard of any of them only charges service fee for tables of more than 8 people like Mosto does.

" Lovely Food"

The food at this place was great. We ordered a cross-section of about five different items and everything was great. The dishes come in a bowl that is in a holder with a candle underneath to keep the food warm longer.the dishes were fresh and flavorful.

It seems family owned and they are very nice. One of the chefs came in with his daughter (I think) and they were very happy to be there and happy to make food for their customers.

Reasonable prices, a good amount of food and it's a clean place.

Enjoyable...

... but not quite as amazing as I'd expected. The issues of price and acoustics as mentioned in other reviews are factors, but mainly the food... There are two options for vegetarians for starters and main course. The starter was delicious, particularly the creamy rich goat's cheese. Unfortunately my quest for good risotto goes on (so far, the wild mushroom risotto at either Olas Tapas or Mare gets my vote) as the red wine and truffle risotto here had a lovely smooth texture but was so salty I couldn't finish it.

The highlights were the excellent wine, which was expertly recommended to us seeing as we were having quite different dishes, and the dessert - everything you've heard about the chocolate souffle is true! It is wonderful! My friend kindly let me try his panna cotta too, and those two desserts particularly illustrated the thing I like about Mosto and the reason I might go back - really unexpected, creative flavour combinations that I wish I was able to try more of!

Very good service, good food and a noisy place.

Very very very good service, I have to say one of the best I ever had in a foreigner's place so far in Beijing. Quick, smiley and efficient, when I asked for smth (pepper, more bread, etc) I had in in the following minute).
The food is very good depending on what you take (the raviolis are incredibly good), talking about the Cod (very good indeed), the pepper salad that is being served with does not match the same taste as the fish' sauce.
But I would surely do something about the acoustic of that place, why not cover that ugly concrete ceiling and make the place a little cozier and quieter ?

i got sick - review removed?

I reviewed my experience at Mosto last week and it has disappeared? advertising dollars a concern admin?
Anyway, I think it is important for diners to know that I was sick after eating the cod at this place.
The servings are small, the service is poor and now that I know they took my proper review off this site I will definitely not go back.
What kind of place can't take criticism?
Probably one with a rude manager and average food

Mosto has been one of my favorite restaurants in this city for the past 5 months. The space is beautiful. The menu is a unique blend of mediterranean & south American deliciousness! Their wine list is always pleasing & surprising and The business lunch is fantastic.
