Pure Lotus Vegetarian 净心莲

With a newer location near the Holiday Inn Lido supplementing the original venue near the Tuanjiehu Subway stop intersection, Pure Lotus offers a serene dining experience with exquisite meat-free versions of Chinese classics made from vegetables, as well as tofu in its infinite forms. The vegetarian sausage passed off as “Buddha’s finger” is highly recommended, while the clean, calming decor makes this an ideal spot for karmic cleansing business dinners. The staff speak serviceable English. Voted "Best Vegetarian" in the Beijinger's 2011 Reader Restaurant Awards.

Too sick to ever go back again...

Review of Pure Lotus Vegetarian

My bf and I went to Pure Lotus Lido branch last friday. The place was busy and it took a while for us to be waited on (had to ask for the menu on 3 occasions with different waiters). We had 4 to 5 dishes and pent 410 kuai. The price is not the issue as it's ok to just have a nice meal once in a while. But the issue is that we both got sick from their food. I ended up throwing up three times. We both had diarrhea. My body was achy and I had fever for 1 day. The perfect start to the weekend after doing over time an entire week (F*ck).

I called them back on Monday (I had to take the day off work, my fever had just come down) and filled them in on the situation. The person who answered the phone said that he was sorry that the food was not up to my taste. I told him that it has nothing to do with taste, it has to do with sanitation, regardless of whether I liked their food or not one doesn't get fever, diarrhea and vomiting out of the being not being up to my taste. Then he apologized.

Mmmm.. just thinking about what we had that night makes me want to regurgitate... I don't think I could ever go back to Pure Lotus again. Our tummies are still adjusting back to normal. (But I think my bf will give it another chance... POOR SUCKER!!!)

Yesterday we visited the new location near the Holiday in. We enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly crew.
The food was awesome. Being a raw food lover I enjoyed the meat-free Chinese recipes. My friend even ordered a sweet dessert that she saw once before in some raw food books and totally enjoyed it.
It was a great evening!

too many frills and high prices

Vegans like veg treats not meat like tasting treats. If you are real vegan and dont like pork and meat flavours, sure you will not like this place.
This place is for meatlovers who feel oh its not a good idea to eat so much meat, so lets try to minimise some calories.

This place is for those and some rich chinese or expats with huge bank balances who want keep trying and discuss about china over a drink.
Mock meats were created for chinese converted to buddhists. Chinese eat a lot of meat and suddenly when converted to buddhism they had to shun meat ,but the love of meat couldnt die, so these were created to satsify the tastes of tongue of those buddhists who craved for meat, but were forbidden to eat.Its for those- yes you can enjoy still have pork flavour without really eating it .Cheat your taste buds and belly and body and mind.!

I was skeptical about this place at first because of 1. mixed reviews and 2. do expats really know Buddhist food, but the Lido location blew us away! When we entered they rubbed rose oil on our hands, and then seated us at plush ruffled tables. They payed attention to every detail!!!! From the food being presented in large white vessels of art to the amazing dofu and various dishes, they knew how to pamper you. we spent 338 kwai on 6 different dishes, and for a hotel it was way below average price. they made you feel special, and if you are going to go out don't you want to be treated like a special guest??? the food was equally amazing, and our favorite was the complex and sweet pumpkin soup, the spare rib style tofu, and the various seaweed wraps and organic rice. the tomato dumplings were incredibly light and flavorful, and only the tomato noodles were adequate tasting like spaghetti. this was a fun fantastic restaurant, and well worth a visit if not two or three, this we will always remember. at the end they gave us lotus flowers

Impressive Setting! Take a date, take a visitor, maybe not a business partner...

Tucked away in a nondescript corner of the city, Pure Lotus is a breath-taking vegetarian restaurant whose atmosphere, elaborate presentations, and small portions make it, in my eyes, the perfect place for a date. While the food ranged from decent and overpriced ("sushi") to extremely yummy ("shui zhuyu" and hand rolls), the presentations were so impressive that we didn't feel cheated even when we felt the food could have been better. Our sushi, for instance, was served on a smoke-enshrouded mountain of ice with a tree growing out of it. The menu is intimidating, both in breadth and actual size, but there was nothing on it we didn't liked. The juices were very "healthy" tasting, and perhaps didn't quite fall into line with our expectations of refinement, but I have to admit we felt like a million bucks after drinking them.

The reason I advise against taking a business partner is because some of the pieces are so large that they can obstruct your view of the other person. They are, however, fun to maneuver around with a loved one.

2 stars?

I am a little surprised that there are two star reviews of this place, especially by people who either "don't understand" vegetarian food or who proclaim to have no expertise on the subject. I never hear any other type of cuisine described this way -- "I just don't UNDERSTAND Taco Bell! It's not REALLY from Mexico!", "I'm not an expert on Italian cuisine but I guess that's what lasagna looks like". Whether you are a vegetarian or not, mock meats are something that Pure Lotus does well and it's something that should be expected of a restaurant that has vegetarian in the name. I understand being new to a type of food and therefore not won over on your first bite but the "purpose" of mock meats is not to cheat in your vegetarianism and they certainly aren't supposed to taste like Kobe beef. Mock meats try to demonstrate that there are more sustainable and healthier versions of our favorite meat dishes and any veteran vegetarian will explain to you mock meats are rare treats and by no means a replacement for your daily protein intake.

THAT being said, Pure Lotus is one of those rare treats. The restaurant is all about 1) experience and 2) flexing its skills in creating unique, vegetarian versions of traditional Chinese "mingcais". If you order any individual items, they serve it to you on a statue of a monk kneeling in prayer. Your meal is ended with mandarin oranges served over dry ice. For goodness sake, they sprinkle you with rosewater when you enter! It's certainly not for everyday dining but I guarantee you will impress anyone you take here. The rabbit and roast duck were particularly convincing (a little too convincing) when I had them but if mock meats aren't your thing, the vegetable based dishes offer interesting and refreshing combinations (try the Silk Road curry).

Nice place

I had never been to the Lidu location before and decided to give it a try for a meeting with some ex colleagues. After being intimidated by the oversized menus, had to ask the server for some recommendations. Of course, he started recommending some of the most expensive items on the menu and telling me not to bother with some of the lower priced items that I had wanted to sample. To make a long story short, I ordered what I wanted to originally and accepted one of his higher priced suggestions.
Overall, the presentation and food quality seemed good but I am far from being an expert on this type of food. It certainly is a convenient place, not loud, and not outrageously expensive. For me, maybe a once a year visit would be sufficient.

A vegetarian restaurant for meat eaters

Being vegetarian, I was told that I should try this restaurant. It was an interesting experience, but I wouldn't be returning anytime soon.

I don't like mock meats, something Pure Lotus does quite well. The quality of its dishes is just so-so and I feel that some non-vegetarian restaurants have a more enticing and appetizing selection of vegetarian options compared to Pure Lotus.

It's a good place for entertaining clients or visitors with their over-the-top food presentation and atmosphere. Go for the experience, but if you're looking for the same type of dishes minus the frills and high prices, I'd recommend Xu Xiang Cai by Yong He Gong.

Harmonious

This place is simply great, relaxing. Low lights, soft music, spa scents, healthy drinks and delicious food, sometimes served in a mystic way (see the free fruit at the end of the meal, served in a "foggy pot").

A bit pricy, but not so much.

I will certainly go back for more!

fake culture

to start with, I'm not a vegetarian in the pure sense, actually not in any sense. Anyway, please allow the question why someone tries to copy the meaty stuff - to do what ?
It stays a 95% copy, artistic and skillful, with interesting flavours and indeed a creative appearance, but neither texture nor taste brings you anywhere close.
Staff is very friendly, the chef is a buddhist monk with quite some aura.

Try the tuna, leave out the sushi, sausage is interesting, drinks are good (non alcohol!).

Transcendental experience

Pure Lotus borders on the pretentious but it is undeniably one of the more unique dining experiences in Beijing.

Though entirely vegetarian, the food is not bland -- their "one finger zen" sausage tastes better and in some senses meatier than the real thing, and their veggie take on lazi ji (chicken pieces stir fried in hot peppers) is again better than the dish it imitates.

The atmosphere is laid back and over the top -- quiet, soothing and relaxing with a vibe that is more reminiscent of a Thai spa than a Beijing restaurant.

Prices are high, I'd expect to drop about 100+ per person for a meal.
