Quanjude 全聚德

A name synonymous in Beijing with roast duck, Quan Ju De’s celebrated birds (RMB 218 per duck) have passed through the mouths of visitors from Fidel Castro to Richard Nixon over the years. Watch your kaoya (烤鸭) being sliced before your eyes, then roll slivers of duck – famed for the layer of juicy fat which lies under a crisp golden-brown skin – in pancakes with shallots and cucumber. Quan Ju De has venues in visitor hot spots all over town, from Wangfujing and the Silk Market to Shuangjing and the Qianmen branch. They continue to serve their birds by the tourist busload, so if you want to avoid a lengthy wait, be sure to reserve in advance. Chinese and foreign credit cards accepted. Voted "Outstanding Beijing Duck" in the Beijinger's 2011 Restaurant Awards.

After my latest visit to Quanjude, I've decided to reduce my rating to 1 star.

The duck is OK but it's gotten so bloody expensive to be a downright rip-off. Aside from duck, there's nary an item on the menu that isn't overpriced. Want a simple vegetable to accompany your dish? The meagre selections of greens start in the range of RMB 60. For a plate of vegetables???

Here's my previous review, where I initially gave the joint 3 stars.

Quote:

Never in my experience of dining at chain restaurants have I come across one brand with such wildly inconsistent quality. Some locations of Quanjude are fabulous, some are utter crap. Rumor has it that the even within one location -- the Wangfujing location, to precise -- the quality (and price) varies floor by floor, with the first floor serving sloppy ducks for the masses and the top floor lovingly preparing the finest birds for Beijing's upper classes.

What all this means in practice is that your first visit to any location of this venerable "time-honored brand" is going to be the culinary equivalent of Russian Roulette, unless of course you have previous reports on that particular location beforehand.

Not impressed

I ate at that Quanjude in Wangfujing street. The duck didn't taste anything special, not worth its price. But me and my friends also ordered some other dishes which were pretty decent. I forgot what the names were but one of them was a fish dish. It was really tender and flavorful.

Favorite duck in Beijing

Still is the best to me. Have been to the Wangfujing location multiple times as well as one other one. The duck is simply plumper and juicier which makes every bite feel better than the best cuts from inferior ducks. I found the service to be alright, especially when we take the private rooms. Some people prefer the less fatty ducks at Dadong, but I personally find the Quanjude heads and shoulders above. The price is a bit steep, so it's not exactly a daily meal. I'd save it for special guests and occasions.

Amazing duck and stellar environment

The first time I went to Quanjude was for a friend’s birthday, so we were fortunate enough to secure a nice private room. With a vibrant Chinese guzheng instrument playing in the background complemented by a Chinese mask performance, I must say that I was extremely impressed by the atmosphere and welcomeness. We ordered a set with several traditional Beijing dishes, which were well done. However, the highlight was by far the duck, which was easily the highest quality and best tasting duck that I’ve had. The soup afterwards was also incredible, complementing a top-notch meal beautifully.

Not worth it

I went to the Quanjude Wanfujing location and I was not impressed with any aspect of the restaurant. The first thing is that the service is slow: it took about 45 minutes for even the appetizers to come, and the duck took longer. The second thing is that the service isn't good even when it does come: The guy who cut the duck definitely didn't give us all the meat on the bird, which we could see since it was right there. As for the actual food, I don't think it's that much better than your average roast duck in any restaurant that claims to specialize in roast duck: It's certainly good, but absolutely not worth 218 kuai if you can pay about 70 for an almost indistinguishable (to the layman) dining experience. One thing that you do pay for is the decor. It's spacious and very majestic, if a little crowded with too many tables, but the overall impression you get is of a Ming dynasty palace. Over all, I'd say try your luck at your local duck joint before quanjude--ultimately it's not worth it.

Would love to know what the Simon Cowell would say about this place

Quanjude has some very nice kaoya! Always get a good bit of meat and skin in each bite and the flavor is pretty decent. Personally I'd prefer it to be a little oilier but that is just because I'm a bit of a glutton. As far as being the absolute best in Beijing being as famous as it is and I think there are definitely more contenders for best duck than people think. I would love either some very experienced duck eaters to have a blind taste test of Beijing’s ducks to determine the best. Or get some d*ckhead professional judge like Simon Cowell to put it under a microscope so it can legitimately be the best in Beiijng.

the most famous Beijing Duck!

i am a man who like having Beijing Ducks, from now on, i have tasted over 20 brands of Beijing Ducks. only the duck of Quanjude is the best. the baked duck will be pared by the kitchener with a knife at the side of your table. it is said that the stuff and cook way were dainty.

Celebrity Duck on a Plate

When you eat at Quanjude you get all the fanfare of eating the same prepared kind of duck that all the other world dignitaries ate. The price is also up there, although not unreasonable. It's certainly something people should experience in their Beijing stay, but once you've been there and done that, then I think any old duck will just do. I just cant tell the difference sometimes between that restaurant's duck and this restaurant's duck, whatever detailed description there is. Sometimes I just want a duck and my baijiu fix to go along with it, and the long lines of tourists waiting outside of Quanjude for their celebrity experience just get in the way.

It's an institution, innit

People seem to complain about the service - not me, it was fab. All our servers spoke enough English, smiled a bit, were precise and attentive and the food came out pretty quickly. Admitedlly it was all rather drilled and brisk but at least it seems like they've got a staff training manual. The duck itself got a general thumbs-up from my out of town guests, though I did feel the slices were a bit crude and the pancakes thick and stuck together (ha, stupid out of towners...). The hoisin sauce was good, very sweet and sticky. Other dishes drew mixed feelings: duck liver was icy cold straight from the fridge (not nice), whereas the duck tongue dumplings were juicy and delicious. We had a great shrimp dish too - the sort of thing you'd see on a menu in Britain or the States - plump, peeled shrimp cooked just tender in a sweet sauce. The wine list is a complete disaster, and yes you can find better food elsewhere at half the cost if you know where to go, but ... the ground floor room of the original branch at Qianmen has a special character AND - most important - you get a certificate of authenticity with each duck. Wicked souvenir. It completes the holy trinity along with a fake Beijing 2008 gold medal and an "I climbed the wall" t shirt.

Do not miss it!

When you mentioned roast duck the Chinese people will speaks out Quanjude all the once I guess. A Laozihao roast duck which can vivid live for such a long time, it must has some charming reasons. The Quanjude roast duck is delicious which is always be my first or second favorite if you ask me what do you want to have today. Oh my, it's around 8pm, I am so hungry to keep thinking the roast duck and write the review. If you come to Beijing, want to taste the real Beijing Roast Duck don't miss Quanjude!

I've had Beijing Kaoya and it was alright. A little pricey for what i got - i thought they should've served up a whole feast for what i paid.

Over Priced Food

Beijing duck is one of my favorite dishes. I have tried dozens of restaurants' duck and found this tourist trap to be the worst Beiing Kaoya I have ever tried. In fact, I left without finishing, and picked up some dumplings at the corner stand to satisfy my hunger. From dry duck to sticky, inedible pancakes to limp cucumber, this place failed at every step.

"Duckies" Ok, but nothing else!

Qianmen

We choose this location as its the original Quanjude reastuarant and meant to be the best, perfect for visiting relatives, or SO we thought!

Duck quality is perfect, thats it.

Staff's attitude and other dishes just are not worth the bother.

The soup from the remaining duck meat and bones was awful and led us to believe was not from the duck and bones but another source. The rice was cold and chewwy. The lamb corriander dish was cold and bitty. The sweet duck pastries were ok.

We made a complaint to the staff about all of this and their attitude was their was nothing wrong.

I will never go back and strongly recommend people to go to other places as its just not worth the price or staff attitude.

Try somewhere else, just becuase the Duck's good its not worth the hassle.

I haven't tried the other Peking Duck restaurants in Beijing yet, but I have been to the Quan Ju De near Tsinghua University three times already. Each time, the food was amazing. If you have four or more people and order a number of other dishes, including the duck, you'll only spend around 70-80 RMB per person and feel satisfied. The dishes besides the duck were also excellent, though I fail to remember the dish names (one being the fatty red pork). The atmosphere is nice, clean, and the servers have always been friendly. I haven't had any complaints yet, in the three times I have been there within the past three months. It's a great place to take guests. You do get the souvenir card for each duck you order and you can watch as they cut it up. I have to try the other restaurants in order to genuinely compare which is the 'best' duck, but even a local Beijinger has recommended this to me as the best.

** Edit: I just tried the Quan Ju De at Wangfujing. I believe the duck at Wangfujing actually might have been a little better than the branch at Tsinghua. However, the duck broth which is served at the end was more watery than the rich broth I normally enjoy at the Tsinghua branch. I also don't recommend the duck fried rice as it was merely passable. The branch at Tsinghua definitely has a better selection of dishes other than the main course of duck, and although it doesn't matter a great deal, this branch offers a nicer commemorative card than the busier counterpart in Wangfujing does.

Not a bad introduction to duck

The big branch at Hepingmen is an institution - raucous atmosphere, grand decor and hard to complain about the flavor of the duck - but it's not the best bird in town these days by a long shot. What's more, rumors that they no longer roast their birds over apple wood (it's conventional ovens now apparently) means three stars is probably fair. A suitable spot to take out-of-town guests.

the best place for Roast Duck

This is the best place to entertain friends for tasting Beijing Duck. Their ducks are specially bred and tastes juicier than all other places. Their list for accompaning items is also quite long and goes well with the duck. Price are a bit higher but you can be sure of quality.
