Silk Market 秀水市场

Although this six-story market is overwhelmingly touristy (and therefore overpriced, even with bargaining), it is filled with everything imaginable – clothing, souvenirs, jewelry, electronics, and fabrics – each with its own section. Be prepared for loud and pushy sellers who are accustomed to dealing with foreigners.

Better selections than Yashow

Bargain shopping can be a hassle, especially if you have to do it repeatedly. They also seem to have the same English teacher as the ones in Ya Show.
you will hear this a lot (say the next lines out loud in Cartman aka Vietnamese hooker voice)
1. Hello friend
2. You are my friend
3. I give you best quality, best price
4. Go a little higher, I am losing money
5. This is real leather. (where they bring out the lighter and put it against the "leather")
6. You are crazy

Please feel free to add more. It's the same lines over and over again.

also, be very critical of the product when bargaining, never show how much you want that knockoff LV :)

What is this place?

This place is just terrible. Sure, they have a lot of cheap knock off stuff, but there's no point buying all that cheap stuff if it's just going to wear out or break in a couple months. I'd rather just pay more and buy something that will actually last me longer than a month. A shoe store owner even told us that the shoes are only made to last a month. And some of the employees who work here are just ridiculous. I had just seen someone get grabbed in front of me and made a comment about it to my friend after which one of the sellers grabs my arm and proceeds to yell at me, "I GRAB YOU!!!"

The only reason I give this place two stars is because there are some decent custom calligraphy and engraving places on the top floor, otherwise stay away.

Great for bargaining for knockoffs

If you're ever looking for decent-looking knockoffs, then Silk Market is definitely the place to be. With a wide selection of fake goods, ranging from watches to shoes to suits, Silk Market offers you the chance to buy any fake name-brand item that you could think of at near dirt-cheap prices (after bargaining, which can reduce their listed prices by up to 90%). As long as you don't take yourself too seriously, then the bargaining at Silk Market is actually pretty manageable; however, if you're readily irritated, then the bargaining and shopping can really feel like a tedious marathon. I've now been a total of 3 times, and all the purchases I've made (includes fake Nikes, shirts, wallets) have actually held up pretty well.

Even if you're not planning to do too much shopping, Silk Market is still a distinctive experience worth trying out.

Would the real cashmere please stand up

Think just about everything related to the Silk Market has been covered below but one piece of valuable info I can add is if you're looking for real cashmere there is only one stall.

They are at the back right of the 2nd floor and only sell cashmere.
Scarves, tops etc.

The price has sky rocketed recently but if you say you've been going there for years then they drop down quite far.
Should pay about 150-200RMB per scarf/sweater.

Good luck!

dont get punkd

the silk market has so much stuff. but also a lot of useless stuff. you could easily buy things you dont need. you may think theyre cool today, but tomorrow they end up being just dead weight that you need to carry.
i hate the fact that they grab people and that one comment about them grabbing someone's small children in order to snarl them over really pisses me off. some of them need a swift punch in the face.
ok, here's the tips for getting rock bottom prices:
1. go when it is raining, they get so many fewer customers then
2. go towards the end of the day when they are about to close, those who havent had a good day will just want to increase their sales
3. once you bought something, put it in larger bags than necessary so other vendors will feel jealous, they will also know that you are for real and are ready to shop, better yet bring a large black garbage bag and fill it with stuff to make it look like you have bought alot, it drives them crazy
4. never tell them how much you would pay, it's a trap when they ask you, always tell them how low they can go
5. dont give in so quickly at the first shop, even if you think you got a good deal, shop around and compare prices
6. dont be afraid to walk away, chances are they will agree to a lower price and yell it to you as you walk away, sometimes their true nature comes out and you can see how nasty they really are, in which case dont give them your business, in any case you dont stand to lose anything since a couple stall down someone else will be selling the same thing
7. speak as little english as possible, they will tell you that your chinese is good even if you can only say nihao, but at least you are bargaining in their language, which is more welcoming, anyway non-chinese speaking foreigners are the easiest of prey
8. listen in to the locals bargaining and hear what kind of price they get
9. if they dont have a new product and try to give you the display product, you should get another discount
10. carefully review your product and make sure there are no defects

Ok! Good good shopping!

A love hate relationship

I love the selection that you can find there and the fact that they have sizes that actually fit me. I have a few vendors I go to for certain items, and I know that they no longer try to rip me off on it. It is fun to take friends from out of town to, as it is just one of those places that people need to go to. However, I hate the fact that a number of the vendors are too aggressive, including grabbing at you or standing in front of you. Good deals can be found, but you really have to work at it - or do as I do and make friends with a vendor who sells what you want to buy and talk to them when it is slow. This works even better if you can speak Chinese with them! Once they are friends, prices will go down to the point where you feel OK about the price.
Regardless of what you are buying there, remember that the starting price will be hugely inflated. I've seen vendors drop their price by 70-80%.

Fun for a while but then it gets old

The Silk Market is probably the most well known market in Beijing and is very touristy. They literally have everything that you are looking for though. The girls that work there are very up front and will do anything to sell stuff. It is really fun for a while but the grabbing, catcalling, etc. really gets old after a while. Prices here are generally higher than other malls but if you are persistent enough you can get a good price.

can get clothes cheap

Good :good Price , Good Quality , reasonable rate, can bargain
bad : bad service.the girls never leave you untill you buy.

if you want to buy clothes and other things just forward only for rates.

Sometimes They go to Far

Whilst i enjoy the prices and variety in the silk market, sometimes the sellers can go too far. Sometimes they grab your arm and start pulling on you and on some occassions they have grabbed my small children and pulled them into the stall as a way of trying to get me in there. On one occassion they wouldnt let me leave the shop!
Although 99% of the sales people here are really nice there are definitely a few that go too far. Does anyone know of a way to complain to the building management if one of the shops crosses the line?
