Temple

If bars were people, Temple would be a total nerd. With the simplest wood fittings, it doesn't even try to look stylish. Beyond the horn-rimmed spectacles, however, is a witty personality that breaks through as you join the crowd for some live music. Opened by three music lovers, this place breathes melodies and beats. In addition to an enjoyable playlist of bar songs, the owners' connections guarantee decent (and free) acts on weekends: rock, folk, jazz, electronic, everything. And despite the fact that the Gulou crowd mostly survives on staple drinks, Temple makes a valiant stab at variety, with over 15 types of beer and some wild cocktails and shooters.

Good job, Beijing Beatles

Went with a couple of musician friends to see the local Beatles cover band at Temple last night. We all thought it was quality. Kudos to those guys. Their songs were well practiced--timing was spot-on and the singers just about hit all the notes. Overall sound showed a genuine devotion to the music. No entrance fee, and the band filled the place and kept the audience drinking through about five or six encore songs. Rule of thumb: if you gotta pay to see music in Beijing, you will probably be disappointed. And steer clear of ticket, beer, cd combos. They always suck. Anyway, cheers to the Beijing Beatles

Love it!
