Way better than expected
I didn't have high expectations after reading previous reviews, but we had a great experience there this week. I'd say the food was 4/5 stars, (the ribs were a bit well done), but a bunch of little things that customers appreciate kicked it up to five stars. For example:
1. Servers spoke excellent English (always a plus)
2. Sweet tea (with free-refills) came with simple syrup on the side, not pre-sweetened, and the server always refilled the glass before it was empty (even that kind of service is hard to find in up-scale restaurants in Beijing)
3. Atmosphere was really neat (all wooden walls and furniture)
4. Food came out quickly
5. The server asked if everything was okay, which gave me the option to mention the ribs being too well-done
I'd recommend giving this place another try if you had a less-than-satisfactory experience in the past: things seem to have improved.

overpriced, so so food
the food was okay... given its American BBQ in Beijing. i feel it was not smoked long enough and I felt it might have been reheated(a big no no). the meat was not supertender and rather rough to cut. the sauce was watered down like crazy. thats my biggest problem. the price was also pretty bad.
home plate is alot better. price wise and quality wise
The decor is unique and service is better than average but coming from the states I am not amused by the stereotypical texas saloon look nor wowed by regular service.
I don't mind paying your prices if you make your food WELL

Great vibe, good food, service...not so much.
I've been going to Tim's for awhile, loved the Jianguomen Wai spot, followed them up to Super Bar Street, and still make a point to get over to the location on Dongdaqiao when I can.
The decor is great (really feels like a road house/barbecue joint) and the food, generally speaking, is always good and a good value. To use an IT metaphor, the hardware is all in place.
It's a software problem. Once the food is served, you're forgotten. Need a napkin? want to ask a question? want a refill? place is on fire?...it can be tough to get anyone to notice. It's a small place, how hard is it to stop by a table once in a Blue Moon and offer a quick "Zenmeyang?"
I'm mentioning this because in the past Tim's has always had decent service, so I'm a little shocked that the last few times I've been there the service has been so disappointing. Hopefully, the problem can be fixed because I do really like the place, but with so many choices available why ruin a good dinner by having to deal with mediocre service?

huge disappointment with Food and Owner's attitude. Staff good though!
I've been going to Tim's for a few years and always valued it as a good establishment with an owner that cares... until tonight that is!
Went there with 3 friends for dinner and conversation as it was close enough to our meeting point and been going there for years... we had the beef ribs and beef brisket (important for the rest of the review). Service was the same as usual with no complaints as drinks came out in a timely fashion and the staff was smiling. We had the vegetarian dip which was slightly worse than usual but nevertheless acceptable.
The ribs came out I gotta say that mine were as good as usual, so were those of the second person. our 3rd companion on the other hand inherited a travesty of a dish with completely burned meat that tasted like gasoline. Not wanting to make a scene or spoil the evening, he set it aside and we kept chatting.... I spotted Tim, who I'd known for a while, said hello and proceeded to ask about the ribs and explain that my friend's dish was nowhere near the quality whereas ours were great. Tim proceeded to blame the quality control, the different sizes of cuts, the cooks and stopped short of blaming the weather. He then asked if he could get us a drink and walk away!!!!
the kicker is that when the waiter came in much later to clear the table, he inquired about the almost-untouched ribs and profusely apologized offering to bring a replacement... something the owner didn't ever bother doing.. by then, we didn't care!
To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. I expect such nonchalant behavior from Chinese staff but not a western owner, and especially not one that has been around for as long as Tim has been in town.
Generally, if i don't care about an establishment, I won't care about seeking out the owner to complain or even write about it.... in this case, I do care and I did expect a lot better response to a complaint about an obviously faulty offering from the owner of the joint.
The rest of the meal was ok, if not pleasurable, but I won't be patronizing the establishment again.... not with the multitude of choices in Beijing.

Fun time at Tim's
I've only have gone to Tim's a few times, but have been happy with it each time I have gone. The servers have always been pleasant (and some of them have funny names - last time I was there I was served by Devil).
When we went the first time, my wife was pregnant, and ordered a burger. The burger was cooked to medium well-ish, and my wife was concerned about eating partially cooked meat. Not only were they happy to cook the burger longer, but they gave her new fries and a voucher for the next time that we went.
Their homemade BBQ sauce is good, but sometimes a little on the watery side.
One of the best deals at Tim's is the Lunch specials. There is a good selection of choices on the set lunch menu.

Gem of a bar
The food here is supposed to be the star, right? Having Texas BBQ in the name and all. Their BBQ is not too bad, large serving, filling, tasty but not delicious. The burgers are not that great but other options are alright for filling a hole.
The rest though is great, it has a wonderful little outside area which is great to site down have a beer and watch the world go past. The beer selection is excellent with bottled beers from all over the world. Happy hour is quite decent too. This place really comes into its own as a bar, has ample TV's dotted around the place with sports on, darts, and a really fun quiz on Tuesday nights. Jokes on the walls of the bathrooms are a great little touch too.

Texas BBQ in Beijing
I studied in Austin, Texas for four years and during that time, I was introduced to the delights of Texas BBQ. About 1 1/2 hour drive from Austin is a small town Buda, which is famous for its BBQ. I frequently came to this BBQ joint with my friends when we feel like getting stuffed on ribs, flanks etc.
I have to say dining at Tim's certainly brings back those memories. I can't say Tim's BBQ sauce is on the level with Buda but the quality of the BBQ are pretty good. What's even better is the proportions. Now all of ya that never been to Texas, I should tell you that in Texas everything comes in huge proportions, especially the food. And at Tim's the proportion certainly did not disappoint.
the service is friendly, but then again I was not dining at rush hour. I am certainly looking forward to dining here again in the future.

Terrible Tim's
WTF!
I was hungry and in the mood for BBQ. I remembered how much I enjoyed Tim's Texas BBQ in the summer of '09, and I went back with high expectations. Unfortunately, Tim dropped the ball.
To start, we were excited by the happy hour special. It advertised half price. When we got there, it was only half-priced margaritas. The beers were 30% off, but I'm not even sure about that. Then the problems really began...
The waitress was confused and very unclear. She pointed to a page with two german beers for 45 yuan each saying that they were both buy one get one free. She brought them to the table along with a tiny bottle of a different beer. When I asked what that bottle was for, she replied, "buy two big botttles, get this small one free." That pissed us off enough to want to leave then and there. We finally convinced her to give us a big bottle for free instead of the small bottle. Then it gets worse.
The food: I ordered a Mexican burger very clearly, even pointing at the menu and saying it twice. Of course I get the wrong burger. They also have an option of paying 15 extra yuan for a baked potato. I remembered how good it tasted before. It had sour cream, bacon, cheese, butter, and best of all, shredded rib meat. When they set the plate in front of me, I look down to find a pathetic excuse for a potato. After complaining again, I got my burger and potato looking more edible. But, the burger was different than before. The meat was terrible, like spam with no taste. I tried my friends ribs and they were dry bland and barely worth putting in your mouth. The BBQ sauce was like water mixed with ketchup and pepper. You'd think that they would at least get that right. The baked beans were watery and room temperature.
To top off our terrible visit, they gave us the wrong bill, and after paying it, they chase us down to pay the more expensive correct bill. If they had let us leave, I might think that they did something to make us somewhat more satisfied. Wrong.
Tim, get your sh*t together cause that place was pure sh*t tonight.

A Memory of Tim's
I just saw a really positive review of Tim's and it brought me back to a night I went to the old location with seven friends. The place was pretty full that night, so the staff moved two tables together for us downstairs, and took our drink order, leaving us to go through the menu. The menu looked good as always, with lots of meat and other sort-of hard-to-find items, so we got all revved up for a big feed of unhealthy, tasty food. After ten minutes the waitress comes back with the drinks and tells us, sorry, the kitchen is now...closed. So funny: you get the menu, and then an all-encompassing "mei you."
I stopped going there after they switched from dill pickles to sweet pickles for their hamburgers(I mean, like, Bush League, man; don't screw up the little things). I also remember that diners should avoid Tim at all costs.

Pretty good if you are into dry meat
Tim's has its moments but the items i've had -- brisket and ribs -- were both extremely dry. When I think BBQ I think "juicy" but not so here. On the flip side, the lean, dry cuts of meat are probably a hell of a lot better for you. Tim's is great for Beijing because its one of the few plying the BBQ trade ... but a little competition wouldn't hurt.

pretty awful
The positive reviews for this place must be fake. The food was bad, and the service was so-so. Ordered a burger--would have gotten better at McDonald's. Nothing like Texas, and I'd know cause that's where I'm from.

Pretty decent
I'm writing to counter the bad review of another poster. Tim's is a fairly decent place. It's not fancy but has some good menu items. I've always been happy with their service too.
Food: I like the Rajun Cajun chicken and the garden salad. They always give free refils of iced tea, which actually comes in a large glass with ice (unlike many places). I'm also a big fan of the potato salad. Most of the barbeque items are good. The steak meal will fill you up.
Conclusion: Not everything is great here but they are at least as good as Peter's IMO.

Tim's Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Since we live around the corner, thought we would give it a try. BUT WOW, what a TERRRRRRIBLE experience. we ordered the 'fish & chips', a mushroom/cheese burger, & a caesar salad to start. what did we get?
first, comes our 'fresh chips' (aka chips and guacamole) and once the waitress heard that we ordered 'fish & chips' and not 'fresh chips', she had the nerve to cover up her blunder by saying that these chips were made from 'fish skin'; so it was technically 'fish & chips'. OF COURSE! HOW MORONIC OF ME!?!
people make mistakes; I get that. but to try to cover up your mistake by saying that 'fish & chips' consists of tortilla chips and guacamole is utterly pathetic. also, since both me and my gf can speak Chinese, the language barrier was not the problem.
second, the caesar salad comes and if I wanted mayo served on some lettuce, I think the local JingKeLong market could have handled that for me. how could a simple dish go so wrong?
lastly, the best part... my burger. I would think that a restaurant that has the word 'BBQ' in its name would not mess that up but low and behold, I get served a black paperweight nuked past recognition that is impersonating as my burger patty (with 2 dinky pieces of mushroom melted over a Kraft single). YEE-HAWWW, that's some texas cooking!!!
Just a word of advice, you know how some reviews of other eateries say "try this dish" or "stay away from this dish". Well, my advice is pretty simple. I have been living in China for over 6 years now and I can safely say that this was probably the worst dining and service I have ever had. JUST STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!
Well, at least they didnt f*** up the Diet Coke.

Hearty (i.e cholesterol-raising) Tex-Mex food
First of all, let me say if you are really hungry and aren't counting calories (a LOT of calories!) this might be the place for you.
The food is BIG. REALLY big.
Here's my lunch:
(EDIT: can't link photos here?)
I ordered the burrito plate. I'm used to burritos in plain flour tortillas, but at Tim's they used sort of soggy corn tortillas. It was hard to tell exactly because they were drowned in a cheese-y sauce.
They were TASTY though! Refried beans, (small) tangy tomato salad included.
Also got hummus (Texas hummmus?) which came with good bread for dipping.
My girlfriend ordered a combination platter which was too much for her. Took a lot of food home in doggie bags.
Ordered two Guinesses and was supposed to get a free gift but they were "out."
I don't remember the exact prices (lost the "fapiao") but both of the main courses were between 80-100RMB.
Paid about 300RMB all up. Good service, comfortable atmosphere.
