Cheap option for a morning cafe

Review of Tous Les Jours

I come here in the morning when I want to get a chocolate chip or almond pastry (6 kuai) and an american (15 for a small). Much cheaper than other chains (costa, 'bucks, comptoirs), especially their pastry. The quality of the coffee varies by day, sometimes being good, other times not so good but enough for morning coffee. The pastries are always good, not great, but as good as anything I get at costa or starbucks. Here is all about the price, not so much about the food. I go here for exactly what I expect to get.

a little pricy

Tous Les Jours is a fair place to go for bread treats, but they are a little pricey when compared to MeiDuoWei.
Some of the really good things are the pastries and danishes (the apple one is very good!), the bagels, and the Ciabatta bread. The stores are always nice and clean, and all have a little sitting area. Donuts there (like many places in Beijing) are not that good, but that is one thing about living in Beijing. I've never tried their prepared deli style sandwiches, but they look tasty and fresh. Every once in a while the breads are a little dry, especially when you go later in the day, but for the most part the breads taste fine, even the next day.

the French is here

French Bakery came to you, so you can test the French fancy Betsey..

looks healthy, tastes creamy

Every time I pass by Tous Les Jour, I have a craving for their vanilla cake, not just its rich creamy flavor, the size is good for calorie-conscious people too, big enough to satisfy the craving. I also like their whole-wheat bread, which looks and tastes fresh and healthy. The store décor makes me feel cozy, but background Korean pop music doesn’t really match the atmosphere.

Fluffy

I had heard that olympic gold medal figure skater Kim Yu-Na had her face on products available at this Korean bakery chain as part of an endorsement deal.

So, as I have always wanted to have my likeness somehow emblazoned on a cupcake, I checked out out the Sanlitun branch (downstairs from Hooters). Alas, no Kim Yu-Na.

This place is a longtime favorite of many, and I was impressed by the selection and the reasonable prices. They have bagels.

This chain loves to blast really questionable music from their store onto the street, don't they? I guess any buzz is good buzz.

Quite so so

Their breads and cookies are mostly a bit dry. The only good part is that they are open late night so incase there is no choice you can surely try them.

The occasional baked gem can be found here

Normally I wouldn't really consider stopping in places like this -- typically home to refined flour baked goods that often have unpleasant surprises inside like cold, mayonnaise-smothered wieners -- but necessity has more than once pushed me to explore the place. Much to my surprise, they have whole-grain bagels in the location near me. Not really enough to remind me of a good Jewish deli back home, but nice enough in a pinch. And no hidden hot dogs in the center.

Excellent value

I've had some business at the U.S. Embassy the last few weeks so I've eaten lunch a few times at the location just north of LaiTai Flower Market on Nurenjie.

They sell a variety of premade sandwiches, all pretty good. The ingredients are decent quality, if not the highest, and everything I've always eaten has looked and tasted very fresh. That by itself puts it above average for this kind of place in Beijing. The prices are very low; today I had a very good chicken/cheese on rye for 15rmb, for example. My smoothie was pretty good, but a little pricier at 22rmb. Still not horrible.

They also sell decent baguettes for 9RMB and many different baked goods between 5 and 15 kuai. They can be a little hit or miss, but stick to the stuff you're familiar with and you'll probably be satisfied. It's no Comptoirs de France, but it's very decent and, on average, probably less than half the cost of C de F.

It's mostly counter service, but if they need to prepare something, they'll give you a number and deliver it to your table. Today, I had forgotten to ask for a napkin, but before I could get up to go get one, a waitress brought me one, unasked. While that shouldn't be worth commenting on, in Beijing it is.

Summary: Quality 3, Service 4, Value 5, for an average of 4 stars.
