What Bar 什么酒吧

There's a lot going on here, given that they've only got about five square meters to work with. What Bar regularly hosts local bands, and is an excellent place to get acquainted with Beijing rock. Every seat is a front-row seat!

Location

  • Beihai Park 北海
  • 72 Beichang Jie (just north of the west gate of the Forbidden City), Xicheng District
  • 西城区北长街72号(故宫西门往北)

Worst "hole in the wall" in Beijing.

At the most, this place is a try-hard hipster den, a haven for the socially awkward. I'm a fun guy and make every situation turn for the better, but this place doesn't give you anything to work with other than a hole in the wall to drink beer in at usual rates.

-Entire place is constantly hot boxed by cheap cigarettes.
-Looks nothing like the pictures, the walls are crumbling apart, the floor is uneven and it's half the size of your average liquor store.
-The stools, tables and chairs are all medieval and cheap; good luck getting comfortable here.
-The bar counter top is constantly filled with advertisements baskets and other junk with as little room there is, you're just about forced to palm your drink, but since this place is so small you'll see someone getting bumped into and spilling their beer on themselves every few minutes. Happened twice to my friend and noticed a bunch others in the short times i've been there.

Don't kid yourself or others, this place is crap, has nothing other bars don't; but more importantly tries to utilize what other bars have, trips over its own feet at the starting line and drags all of those usually positive factors down into the dirt with it.

what bar, what else do you need

Luckily for me I pass by this place on my home from work, otherwise I never would have found it. The owner .... whose name escapes me is the warmest welcoming face you will find around and it's an easy place to break the ice with locals and foreigners alike. The bat is low key like a friend's garage or basement and the music leans towards indie, folk, and eclectic rock. I love thos place and pints are cheap and not filled with that funky fake alcohol

You've got to go at least once...

Make having a draft here the reward for finding it. I recommend seek it out on foot while wandering around the surrounding hutongs of the Forbidden City (which have plenty of interesting little gems of all sorts... odd museums and galleries, restaurants, parks etc.) then arrive in the early evening and wait for the band to arrive. A good place to have music and local conversation in the midst of history. It's been quite a while and I'd say a lot of the local bands, new and old, have played at least a gig or two here.

cozy bar to have a rest in the afternoon during the week and insider tip for live music at friday and saturday evening

I recently have been in a nice cozy bar in the Hutongs. From the outside you could walk by without noticing :-) But if you look closer, you'll see the sign over the entrance, written “WHAT?! BAR 什么“. That bar is the only live music rock bar with an atmosphere of ancient architecture I have seen yet.
On Fridays and Saturdays they have lokal and sometimes international Bands playing Rock, Folk, Ska or Britpop (around 9pm). It's definetly not the normal "softpop" you can hear somewhere else. Normally there are 2 or 3 Bands playing each night. The entrance fee is around 30 RMB but includes a drink for 20 RMB.

During the afternoon it is a nice place to chill. You are also welcome to try out your music skills with the bandequipment of that bar...

I came to the bar by underground: You exit at Tiananmen West, Exit B, then turn right - into the nan(south) chang jie (Street). Walk 15 minutes (about 1 km) - it'll change name into bei(east)changjie (Street).
Later I saw that the Bus No. 5 stopps close to the bar as well (Busstop is: Xihuamen 西华门)
