April Gourmet 绿叶子食品店

Chain of stores purveying imported cheeses, olives and cold cuts, as well as staples like dried pasta, canned tomatoes (and beans) and cereal. Prices can be high for goods that can seem a bit shopworn. The Shunyi branch offers a small but constant “specials” section, which often features imported cookies and filter coffee.

It took me some time to locate this . For over 3 months that I am back in Beijing after a stint abroad I was missing these stuff.

Good cheese, and many small things which feel at home. I find the prices reasonable and the staff is helpful.

Recommend this place for western daily life groceries and more.

When I discovered April Gourmet it was at the Xingfucun one by Chunxiu Lu I was the happiest man alive. I had been going to the Jenny Lou's (and getting brutally beaten in the wallet) once per month to pick up essentials. But now, I always go to Aprils. Its my first choice and it is my only choice. I have been so impressed with the customer service at their Dongsi shitiao branch and their other branch. Just last Christmas, one of the girls behind the counter, with a big smile on her face said "Merry Christmas, sir." Much of the staff doesn't speak English (I'm sorry, but you CANNOT expect them to, this is China, and I get very angry when I hear foreigners yelling at Chinese people to speak in English) but the ones that do always seem happy to at least make the effort and help you fumble through with Chinese (always a fun time for all).

I have NEVER had a bad customer service experience at any of the stores, I find many of the prices relatively comparable to back home (usually plus or minus about 50 cents to a dollar USD.) Of course, some of the stuff is obviously going to be more expensive than back home.

I'm actually so impressed that I can do two weeks of grocery shopping for myself and my flatmate (we split the bill) for a total of 800 (400 each). This is comparable to what I was paying for myself, maybe about 60-70rmb cheaper, back home in Massachusetts. I love April Gourmet, great quality, great service, friendly store environment. 5 stars.

P.S. I should mention I've never used the delivery service... I usually just take a taxi home. So, in-store experience is great, totally worth at least a visit. Delivery service, unfortunately I cannot offer too much in-put on that.

Convenient place for groceries

Whether you need a quick cereal or a Jam or any such product, you could find it has good variety.

Good brown breads, they also have some good cheese .

The store is spacious and clean and you would pick mostly what you wanted .

The staff is also friendly and helpful.

Nearly forgot the best part, they had the best Fudge i have had in years, and honnest to goodness Butter Tarts - It was a real Thanksgiving in Beijing

I like the place, the staff are friendly and helpful, eventhough they are a tad bit friendlier to the non-Chinese looking costumers, the prepared food are good enough that I'll choose to buy my dinner there if I don't feel like cooking or going to a restaurant. They have most of what I want and basic needs and it is quite convenient.

The vegetables needs to be improved though, I once found a big juicy worm on their corn cob and the cabbages always leaves me reluctant to even touch them.

And I know this have nothing to do with April Gourmet per se but the beggar that seems to set office on their front step can be annoyingly persistent in asking for money sometimes.

I wanted to give them higher ratings but the worm (and it was HUGE) deducted 1 star right off.

Big store, happy to find many western stuf.
But when it comes to fresh meat...... the color is not very attractive, even the salmon looks a bit old,
i think the refrigerator is not working correctly.
Good for dry food but not for fresh one, i prefer to go to local market for the fish.
Anyway, cheese .... yami yami i will come back for the comte cheese.

My only wish is that I wish it were larger and had more fresh selection

I love this place because it has the juices, non-dairy milk selection, coffee/espresso (lots of kinds), fresh breads from the German and French bakeries, all baking products you will need, and a huge variety of spices, grains, oils and sauces. In one week I made polenta with tomato sauce, hummus, brownies, vietnamese summer rolls and Thai curry all using ingredients from this store. They have their own much cheaper brand (looks like a non-brand) for things like cocoa powder, cake flour, baking powder, popcorn kernels, red lentils, raisins, almonds, etc which saves a lot of money and the quality is quite good. In addition to lots of Australian, American, and European (especially Italian, Spanish, and some French and German products) they also import some low-cost products from Thailand, Vietnam, and India. I think the turnover on a lot of the products is quite high, so there's little chance you'll get something that's been sitting on the shelf forever like at Jenny Lou's.

They also have a decent selection of eco-products for around the house, such as green house cleaners, natural laundry detergents, and some natural personal products such as soaps and shampoos (although expensive, still not as high as Jenny Lou's or World Health Store).

I don't eat the prepared foods usually, and the banana cake was OK. Frankly though, I'd rather make my own, and I know I can buy the ingredients to do so here!

All in all, it's a reliable and frequently-visited store for me, the almost-vegan. Smile
