I was going to Dr. Zhang Zhimei in August 2018 because I had to do a root canal treatment. I went to a public clinic before but they couldn't offer the most modern way of treatment. After talking to my German dentist in Germany I decided to search a medical practise which could offer a good treatment. Actually I found the Joinway Dental Clinic on the internet and gave it a try.
To say one thing first: Dr. Zhang (she likes to get called Jane) destroyed the treated tooth, didn't tell me that and intentionally deleted an x-ray where one could see the medical malpractise. Finally, after mediation through Dongzhimen's and Beijings administrative units, where she confessed the maltreatment and agreed to the result of the mediation she refuses to pay the amount officially settled. We need to go to court now.
I suggest: Never go to this dentist! Everybody who has similar trouble with her is very welcome to contact me! Please send me a personal message.
Who wants to know what happened in detail might want to continue to read:
Dr. Zhang can be a very sympathic person. When I first went to her practise I was aware that I need to talk about the price and very clear what I needed because my dentist in Germany was so kind to explain everything in detail. So I talked to Dr. Zhang very clear and about every step needed for the treatment. She was showing me all her German machines and material for the treatment! She took an x-ray showing me the problem, was answering all my questions, offered the treatment I was asking for and all at an a bit expensive but still reasonable price. If she would really do the work she promised.
Root canal treatment today is very sophisticated and includes hight level hygenic precaution (for example a peace of rubber installed around the tooth during treatment to keep away all saliva from the opened root canals) and under microscopic view the removal of the nerves in the roots and cleaning of the root canals. This wasn't offered in the public clinic but increases very much the chance of a successful treatment so the tooth could be saved. I agreed to the price and treatment.
However, at the first session she didn't use neither microscope nor the hygienic preacautions we talked about. I didn't know if that might come later only but I complained when I had the second session. With some resistance Dr. Zhang agreed to use both. She treated the root canals but then destroyed the cementum of the tooth and broke through it at it's bottom inbetween the roots. With local anaestesia you don't feel that. Dr. Zhang didn't say a word but after the session took an x-ray and talked to me that she found a little problem here and showed me the x-ray: there would be some dental calculus and she would suggest to remove that at the next session. I was hesitating because I was afraid, that it would be expensive but she said very fast, she would do it for free. I said I would think about that until the next time.
I was still wondering how the concrements she showed me on the x-ray have come there but I am not a dentist. The next time I agreed into the operation. What she wanted to hide through that operation was that she put normal cement into the broken tooth and what would normally had to be immedeatly treated with MTA, which is some special material for repairing a tooth which is broken this way. You have to do it very soon, otherwise the chance to keep the tooth is very fast getting lower. But she decided not to take responsibility for her mistake.
She had put far to much of the wrong material into the tooth which was fixed like you would fix a broken tube wrapping around some cloth. Because any other dentist after her doing an x-ray on this tooth would have immedeatly seen what happened she decided to camouflage her medical malpractise. I asked at the same day for the x-ray but she said she would give me that after the treatment is finished with all other informations together. I thought thats resonable.
She needed to cut the gingiva to scratch away the about 2 mm thick cement under the tooth. She said everything would be good now and if the root canal treatment would be finished it would be treated succesfully. I still trusted her to that moment and waited some weeks to see if I still have pain at the tooth, before she wold make the crown for the tooth.
I had pain. I started thinking that I didn‘t really trust Dr. Zhang and went to another practise making an x-ray. After sending that to my german doctor he was very clear what had happened.
I was using WeChat asking Dr. Zhang again for the x-ray saying I am in Germany seeing my dentist and because of pain and I would urgently need my x-ray. Getting her reaction I would know if she was lying. Dr. Zhang was answering that the intranet was broken and maybe it would be impossible to restore the x-ray. Actually I do know today that she than deleted the picture.
The next time I went to the practise I went with my wife and confronted Dr. Zhang. She immedeatly confessed, there was just no way to hide. She was crying more than one hour (with tears and snobbing, a big show!) and telling us how difficult it was for here to build up the practice, how little money she would earn and that any kind of maltreatment never happened to her, her staff would be very bad and every some weeks she wouild have to search for new dental assistants and so on. But she didn‘t agree in the 100.000 RMB we have been asking for, offering 20.000. Well, this doesn‘t even cover the costs of the now neccesary treatment, so we didn‘t agree and she was not accepting 80.000 RMB as well.
There is a system of mediation for medical problems like this available in Beijing. We said to Dr. Zhang that we can go through this to find a sum for compensation, she agreed and said we should contact the Beijing Medical Mediation Komitee 北京市医疗纠纷人民调解委员会. There are two systems of mediation, but we agreed to her proposal and in that time I had still mixed feelings, if she is a bad person generally or just once made a big mistake and didn‘t know how to react.
Most of the work was done by my chinese wife than. Dr. Zhang didn‘t hide her mistake talking to the Beijing Medical Mediation Komitee so after some months everything was fine to sign an agreement, which was low but would have meant to get the money immedeatly and I could have fixed my tooth. However, that didn‘t happen. On the day of signing the agreement in the Rooms of the Beijing Medical Mediation Komitee Dr. Zhang suddenly said she would not sign.
We have to go to court to get a compensation now. I might write more if that is finished to make clear, what a person like Dr. Zhang can provoke and finally doesn‘t agree to take responsibility.
In the meantime we have evidence that she deleted the x-ray intentionally and writes the patient history not like the law requires directly after every treatment but fake it later to her needs. We talked to many people and have found more information about her, which I don‘t want to write here now to protect the witnesses.

Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
I'm sorry for you man. Reall bad luck. But why in the hell did you as a German decided to do this kind of treatment in China? I understand it is much cheaper than in Germany, but you should have checked prices in Czech Republic, Slovenia or Croatia. Definitely much cheaper than in Germany but with with same expertise level.
Hope you get your money bacl and fix the tooth.
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
@Bond1806 I am living in Beijing, not in Germany. A root treatment can take months and I am working here, so your suggestion wouldn't work in this case. I don't really understand the reason of your comment, do you think, that every dentist in China is like that? Well, than there is no need to read this part of The Beijinger. I think, consumers view on any services is important and would I have searched for Joinway here I wouldn't have gone there. Your comment is not very helpful in this case. But thank you for your good wishes!
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
I agree with Bond1806. You should never do any sort of surgical procedure in China. You already live here so you know everyone does a bullshit chabuduo job on everything, and that the education system is a joke. You should have gone to Hong Kong or Germany.
I'm sorry to hear about your situation.
To anyone new to China reading this, please take this advice: don't get sick in China. Fly home and get treatment there.
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
Well, you should have done your research better.
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
in defense of OP I know a lot of cases of people getting good dental treatment here.
And i was seriously messed up by a dentist in the US
It’s not a China/Not China thing — its practioner by practioner
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
Thank you, admin. I myself had good treatments in different cases in China. And if anyone only have to say, one should to go to foreign countries, than having a category about practises and doctors where you can leave comments at The Beijinger wouldn't have any use. People with this kind of answer shouldn't bother others with their useless comments. You just sabotage a consumers platform which has a better level than your cheap thoughts. Every comment with knowledge about a legal procedure would be helpful.
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
Only trolls here? Not really realistic for many people. Don't get sick in China, funny! What about accidents? I am not interested in comments of people who can always fly home, but from people, who have to live with the chinese medical system. Thank you!
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
I don't understand why are you so angry about people commening on your situation? Everyone here has it's own experiences and opinions about China.
Two months ago i've broken my collarbone. ER doctor after examining my xray said that the surgery will be needed and it will cost 50.000RMB. I was shocked and immediately started to go through my options. One was even to go home for a surgery. But, since I know some top notch surgeons here, they told me to go to Jishuitan hospital which is the best in Beijing for these cases.
I went there and expert doctor told me no surgery is needed and traditional method of recovery will sufice. My experience in Chinese hospitals is quite positive. Nothing to complain about. And if you did your research your would maybe be better. Public hospitals are way better than private ones. For the same quality/service you will pay less than in private one.
No one is trolling, but asking why you did not check all available options. Obviously you are pissed off and it's a bad luck but you should have done some research. And definitely not on The Beijinger since their reviews and opinions are heavily biased.
Good luck with the law suite.
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
Without people sharing their experience (bad or otherwise), research could not be done, now, could it? This review is basically a brick that may help people trying to do that "research" you all talk about.
Re: Dr. Zhang only destroyed one tooth, hided that and doesn...
Thank you @TRMalex for your support. And to the others: I am angry about you, because it puts all (!) responsibility to the patient: Your fault, you went to a doctor in China... But this page of The Beijinger makes only sense, if its about the doctors. You could ask The Beijinger to open a page about patients and put your comments there. This is not the right place for this kind of comments. I thought it's helpful to put all this information online to let people know more about a process. I welcome everybody who is adding any information helpful for me or others. Thank you!
