An Organic Visit to Liuminying Ecological Farm

During our visit to Liuminying Ecological Farm (留民营生态农庄), the most memorable scenes were rows of opaque greenhouses, dozens of Lego-like operating rooms with cheerful red roofs and yellow walls, blue skies and bright sunshine. Located in Daxing District, it is the first village applying ecology agriculture in China.

“A part of the animal poop from the cultivating factory is made into methane through anaerobic fermentation, while another part goes to fertilize the vegetables. They are organic.” said Yang Li (杨立), the manager of Qingfuyuan Vegetable Limited Company (青圃园菜蔬有限公司) owned by the farm.

Imagine that you are a salad glutton, who raves about organic greens without artificial man-made fungicides, herbicides, hormones pesticides that often appear in the headlines of our daily newspapers. You’ve probably dreamed about an indoor garden full of juicy, attractive vegetables where, without the least bit of hesitation, you could bite into a tomato which was picked from the plant just five seconds ago. After finishing an extremely fresh organic tomato at Liumingying Farm, I then sampled some raw green pepper, red cabbage, New Zealand spinach, fennel and bok choy one after another, as happy as a rabbit.

Don’t worry, you needn’t set up your own veggie patch nor drive beyond the South 6th ring road in order to enjoy fresh organic vegetables. Wal-mart, Carrefour and Renaissance Beijing Capital Hotel are all customers of Liumingying Ecological Farm.
