Modernista's New Must-Try Brunch For Al Fresco Hutong Dining

Just when I thought I had out-brunched myself last weekend, I found myself, at 11am on a Saturday morning, heading for yet another round. This time, I wanted to see what Modernista had to offer the slightly-hungover and quite hungry (spoiler alert: it was really good and you should go next weekend, especially if the weather is being agreeable because there are tables outside).

The spring weekend brunch menu has seven different options, ranging from the Norwegian Basic (RMB 70, at top), to the Thai Kiss Salad (RMB 65), and heavier options like carrot and ricotta homemade ravioli (RMB 75). My friend opted for the Russian Style (RMB 70) breakfast which was a bit of everything: smoked salmon, pancakes, cucumber salad, grapefruit, and yogurt topped with muesli from Miss Muesli.

After picking your food, you also get a drink at a reduced price. There are shakerato's, which are espresso's blended with a homemade syrup for a real morning kick, or there are prosecco cocktails, virgin Bloody Marys (or the regular, of course), coffees (RMB 10-15 with your brunch), juices (RMB 25 with your brunch), or lemonade.

We opted for one of the kitchen's other new creation: the coconut iced mocha (RMB 45 with brunch), which blew our minds. The blend of chocolate, coffee, and coconut was so subtle that although the three distinct flavors were clear, there was no one flavor overpowering the rest, nor was the concoction too sweet.

If you want to prolong your brunch or plan to spend the day sipping cocktails, lazily watching hutong life pass by, pick up their Sunday happy hour menu (RMB 35 between 12pm and 9pm) on aperitif cocktails (think Pimm's, Bloody Marys, dry martinis, and Campari or Aperol spritzes), which would usually set you back RMB 50-60. Dangerous.
