Revealing the Truth About Your Underwear

Knickers, undies, panties, banana hammocks … whatever you call them, they are an important part of (almost!) everyone's wardrobe. Despite the amount of money spent on these little pieces of fabric, and the fact that these delicate bits support your delicate bits, underwear is rarely talked about from a health perspective.

So, ladies and gents, if you've always had awkward questions about underwear choices and your health down there, here are some answers:

How bad is it to do a second day in the same pair of underwear?
You’ve thought about this at least once, especially when you’ve skipped your laundry day. The surprising truth some doctors reveal is that, as long as the fabric is absolutely dry and unmarked, you could go two days without a fresh pair. On the other hand, if you detect excess moisture, it is advisable to change into a fresh pair twice a day.

Does the fabric matter?
Cotton underwear is recommended for men and women because it allows breathability and absorbs moisture. Save the silk, satin, and synthetic ones for special occasions because they trap moisture, which promotes growth of bacteria and yeast.

What is the best way to wash underwear?
Health experts suggest a high temperature wash using non-scented, hypoallergenic detergents. Always segregate your laundry – studies have shown that bacteria from soiled underwear can travel onto items such as towels and dishcloths and spread bugs like E. coli.

Is it okay to wear a thong while working out?
Wearing a thong while exercising or even otherwise on a daily basis, may bring E. coli living in the rear toward the front as you move, increasing your risk for urinary tract infections (UTIs). Seamless underwear or athletic wear that provides support and is made of breathable, moisture wicking sports fabric may be a better option while working out.

Are boxers really better than briefs?
When it comes to health reasons, the real question here is whether briefs lower sperm production due to increased scrotal temperature. While briefs may provide a more comfortable fit for some men, doctors say that if you are in the baby-making phase of life, you may want to stick to boxers.

If breathable underwear is good, isn't wearing no underwear even better?
Skipping underwear at night or wearing loose boxers while sleeping is recommended in order to let your bits breathe. However, going commando during the day is not the best idea because it promotes moisture build-up. It is also especially harmful when wearing jeans or fabrics that may cause friction and chafing.
