The Competition Heats Up In the Last 24 Hours of Burger Cup Elite Eight Round

Like a freshly flipped beef patty on the grill, the competition is sizzling up as the Sweet Sixteen round for this year's Burger Cup draws to a close. Now you've only got 24 hours left to have your say before half the competitors are culled from this round and the Elite Eight is announced at 3pm on Friday, Jul 5.

The partaking restaurants will be grateful for every vote they get in this nail biter of a round. Like any great face-off, many of the competitors are down to the wire, no doubt leaving us guessing right up until the last ballots are counted tomorrow.

A few examples of the burger purveyors locked in visceral, still too close to call Mortal Combat:

Liangma River craft brewers Arrow Factory against fellow booze enthusiasts The Great Outdoors from Fangjia Hutong; Courtyard 4 American grub stalwarts Home Plate (as pictured above during our Burger Festival) against The Local; and it's a real a David and Goliath saga between Shilipu newbie Crafters against veteran chain Blue Frog.

Here's a Breakdown of the entire Sweet 16 matchup:

Bracket A

  • Q Mex (1) vs. Let’s Burger (4)
  • The Great Outdoors (2) vs. Arrow Factory (3)

Bracket B

  • Slow Boat Brewery (1) vs. Boxing Cat (5)
  • Home Plate BBQ (2) vs. The Local (3)

Bracket C

  • Great Leap Brewing (1) vs. Beersmith Gastropub (5)
  • Blue Frog (2) vs. Crafters Brewing Co (6)

Bracket D

  • Side Street (1) vs. 4corners (4)
  • Jing-A (2) vs. 3 Little Pigs by Andy’s Craft Sausages (3)

Royal Stacks, Please Come Back!

Then there was disheartening news for Shilipu up-and-comers Royal Stacks. Despite their popularity, the Aussie burger slingers were eliminated in the last round, becoming the first in-Cup casualty after suddenly shuttering their Beijing location. On the upside: they promise to reopen elsewhere in the city soon at an undetermined place. We're remaining optimistic because the Royal Stacks brand is reportedly still going strong in Shenzhen, with lines regularly out the door.

Voting schedule as it remains (Jun 22-Jul 16):

  • Elite Eight: Friday, Jul 5, 3pm
  • Final Four: Tuesday, Jul 9, 3pm
  • Championship Round: Friday, Jul 12, 3pm
  • Beijing's Best Burger crowned: Tuesday, Jul 16, 4pm
