1. 好久不见! Hǎojiǔbújiàn! 

Long time, no see!


This phrase is a classic example of good “Chinglish” and literally translates to “long time no see.” Use it as a standalone sentence when you reunite with long lost friends during your reunion tour! 


2. 我是… 人。我在 ... 生活、工作 Wǒ shì … rén. Wǒ zài... shēnghuó, gōngzuò

I'm from... I live and work in...


As a foreigner traveling around, you're sure to field questions from locals who are curious about what you're up to in China. Memorize these simple sentence structures to answer their queries in one breath: 

你好!我叫 Ben。

(Nǐhǎo! Wǒ jiào Ben – Hello! My name is Ben)

我是美国人。

(Wǒ shì Měiguórén – I'm an American) 

我在北京生活工作。

(Wǒ zài Běijīng shēnghuó gōngzuò – I live and work in Beijing)

5. 这边的景色真迷人 Zhèbiān de jǐngsè zhēn mírén

6. 麻烦给我一些纸 Máfan gěi wǒ yī xiē zhǐjīn

Please give me some tissue paper.

This survival sentence is an absolute life-saver during emergencies, especially of the bathroom variety! Ask a generous person in the restroom to share their toilet paper with you, or request tissue paper from a restaurant attendant when you're in need.


7. 你们本地特色菜是什么?Nǐmen běndì tèsè cài shì shénme?

What's the local cuisine here?


China is home to regional delicacies galore and you'll probably never eat the same dish twice when traveling between provinces. Make the most out of your adventure by sampling as many local foods as you can. Be sure to try 米粉 (mǐfěn, rice noodles) when in Guilin! 



8. 有空来...找我玩 Yǒu kòng lái...zhǎo wǒ wán

Come visit me in ... when you're free


Who doesn't love an invitation to visit new friends in a new city? Used commonly by locals, this sentence will help you make a warm impression by inviting new friends to visit you in the city you live in. For example, "有空来深圳找我玩 (Yǒu kòng lái Shēnzhèn zhǎo wǒ wán)."


9. 注意安全,多保重 Zhùyì ānquán, duō bǎozhòng

Stay safe and take care.


Nowadays, it's more important than ever to remind those you meet to stay safe and take good care of themselves. Use this authentic farewell phrase when you're parting ways with acquaintances or friends. 


10. 一路平安! Yīlùpíng’ān! 

Have a safe trip!

Frequently paired with #9, you will often hear this phrase from Chinese friends and coworkers who want to wish you a safe and pleasant trip. It's a great way to end a conversation on WeChat or in person.
