While our Juicy Burger Cup is all about meaty burgers, we here at the Beijinger still have some love for the many vegan and vegetarian burger options to be found throughout the capital.

Here are a few of our favorites:

The Hutong Hipster & Country Roads – Side Street

Although Side Street does have a plant-based meat burger available on their menu (RMB 93), they’ve also got two other veggie burger options for those looking for something beyond a plant-based meat patty.

These are the Hutong Hipster (RMB 60), which sees a spicy spinach potato patty combined with onion, tomato, lettuce and spicy sour sauce on a vegan bun; and the Country Roads (RMB 68), featuring a spiced cottage cheese patty with onion, tomato, lettuce and two sauces: a house sauce and garlic mayo.

The Fava Bean Falafel Burger – Apollo

This newest entry to Beijing’s restaurant scene isn’t shy about attention to details in everything from their interior design to their food, and one excellent example of the latter is Apollo’s Fava Bean Falafel Burger (RMB 98).

This is a patty made from fava bean and quinoa falafel combined with smoked eggplant babaganoush, coriander, cucumber, minted yogurt, with an added kick from spicy harissa chili sauce; a ton of flavor under one bun.

Doufu, Doufu and More Doufu – Slow Boat Brewery

Like Side Street and a great many other burger joints here in Beijing, Slow Boat also offers a plant-based burger -- aka the Chairman Sue (RMB 68) -- as well as a mean mushroom burger, the Grilled Vegan (RMB 48, available only at their Dengshikou location). They’ve also got a thing for doufu burgers, with three different varieties on offer.

First up is the Dongsi Doufu (RMB 50), a fried tofu patty mixed with chopped veggies and sauce. There’s also Mock The Morning (RMB 59) a variation on their Mourning The Morning burger, which has a fried tofu patty topped with an egg and avocado. Finally, and only available at Slow Boat’s Maizidian location, is the Love The Chou burger (RMB 55), which combines tofu with blue cheese, which will perhaps make you fall in love with flavors similar to those of 臭豆腐 chòudòufu.

Mushrooms & Beyond – WasPark

For something a little simpler than the aforementioned burgers, there’s WasPark. They keep things simple with a Beyond Meat burger (RMB 60) that’s not unlike their normal beef offerings. It’s just “meat”, cheese, tomato, onion and lettuce.

They’ve also got a Mushroom Egg Sandwich (RMB 42) – that consists of sautéed mushrooms with egg, tomato, and lettuce on a toasted bun.

Ratatouille on a Burger – Panorama

Perhaps one of the more creative vegetarian burgers in the capital comes by way of French restaurant Panorama. Their Le Ratatouille (RMB 65, comes with fries) is pretty much a patty made from the classic French dish of the same name, topped with tabasco mayonnaise sauce on top of mushrooms, cooked onion, and lettuce.
