Eating and Drinking Around Maizidian Pt.2

Following on from our first post, where we explored places in Ichiban Street and Ichiban Yokocho, we’ll now be taking a look at a few other places around the Maizidian area. From brewpubs to dumplings to bakeries and more there are plenty of spots to go and enjoy some good food and a few drinks.

Please bear in mind that as it’s Chinese New Year some places may be closed, so it’s best to check ahead to make sure they’re open.

Baoyuan Dumplings

Known for their colorful dumplings, Baoyuan Dumplings has been a staple in Beijing for around 20 years and has even repeatedly won Bib Gourmand status in the Beijing Michelin Guide. The big draw here is their famous colorful dumplings which are dyed with natural ingredients like carrot juice for the orange or spinach for the green. You can change any of their dumplings to colorful ones by simply requesting them and paying RMB 1 extra.

Dumpling fillings range from traditional options like Pork and Celery (RMB 21), Lamb and Onion (RMB 33), and Pork and Cabbage (RMB 21) to more unusual fillings like Kung Pao Chicken (RMB 20) and Cheese, Mushroom, Tomato and Pineapple. Aside from dumplings they also do a variety of Sichuan dishes like Twice Cooked Pork (RMB 38) and Dry Pot Cauliflower (RMB 40).

Slowboat

Slowboat’s Maizidian branch has their usual offering of banging burgers like their famous The Fryburger (RMB 69) or Lao Thai Thai (RMB 75) and excellent brews such as Monkey’s Fist IPA (RMB 45) and Drink Like a Fish Pilsner (RMB 40). However, the Maizidian branch also has a weekend brunch menu only available at this and their Sanlitun branch.

Running from 11am until 3pm it’s more than your typical brunch menu, with inventive items like The Hash (RMB 60) which sees crispy fried string-cut potatoes topped with sautéed onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach, and poached egg; The Corned Beef Hash (RMB 70) which has the addition of their house-made corned beef; and The Brynneth Pawltro Hash (RMB 65) that’s finished with spicy fried chicken. Along with great brunch food, they also run a special promotion where their Signature Bloody Marys (RMB 50) are buy one get one free!
