Copies of Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress on Taobao

All over the world, the public awaited with great anticipation for the unveiling of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. And the overwhelming response is that we weren’t disappointed – the satin and lace Alexander McQueen gown was heaped with praise by fashion media and common people alike.

So it seems only natural that, “mere hours after Kate Middleton’s wedding dress was first revealed, tailoring stores on Taobao.com … were already offering replicas of the dress” (WantChinaTimes.com).

One young shop owner, Chen Sumiao, 23, told China Daily, “We have been closely following the wedding dress Kate would wear ever since she and Prince William announced their engagement.”

"The minute the design became known, we discussed with our designers about its feasibility and came up with a plan overnight," said Chen.

According to WantChinaTimes.com, copies of the gown are currently selling for around RMB 1,600 to 1,800. If you think that price range will be too steep to attract Chinese buyers, think again – Chen claims she has received “twenty or so enquiries a day about the dress” so far.
