Huguosi Xiaochidian 护国寺小吃店

Like Baikui Laohao and Nan Lai Shun, Huguosi is a semi-state-run enterprise where many snacks are collectively offered under a single roof. Huguosi is packed with customers all day. Like them, you can go satisfy your snacking cravings with miancha, youbing, aiwowo, lü da gun, tang juanguo, tang huoshao, and more. The freshly made breakfast snacks are fantastic – go early in the morning for the best selection.

Good variety, good place for experience

There are much better places for Beijing snacks than Huguosi. But those places are more specialized in one type of snack than big variety. Only huguosi got them all together! From yummy intestines, noodles, sore soya juice to the little sweet yellow bean cakes... they are all there for you to choose from.

It's the best one stop beijing snack eating place for sure!

Keeps it Real

I'm not a huge fan of lao Beijing street food, but my Hui-minority in-laws have a nostalgic soft spot for this place because it's one of the few remaining restaurants (or chains, to be precise) where you can still sit down with a steaming bowl of douzhi (fermented soy curds) and fried dough rings and eat shitang (cafeteria style) like back in the day.

They also do bao du (boiled tripe) and rou bing (meat pies) - so this is definitely the place to get a real taste of old Beijing.

Maybe it's a Beijing local thing

It's cheap, popular, hygienic and historical as Beijing locals always said.

With 20ish RMB, you can get 4 or 5 different kinds of Beijing style snacks. And according to the popularity of this restaurant, the food is assumed to be authentic, because most of the customers are all Beijing natives who know what and how to order.

Anyhoo it's not as good as I expected. Beijing Cheese/ (奶酪) (Nai Lao) , Jellied Bean Curd/ (豆腐脑) (Dou Fu Nao) and Almond tofu/ (杏仁豆腐) (Xin Ren Dou Fu) were great, totally melting in your mouth. Others like some other cakes, noodles are a little bit disappointing. Too dry and not really tasty, it was as normal as other food you can have anywhere else. And the service was just so-so.

This was our adventure on Beijng local food, and it ended up sitting in that famous place and wondering why Beijing locals love those snacks that much.
