OMG: Usher Thrills Wukesong

R&B heartthrob Usher delivered an unforgettable “One Night Stand” concert on Sunday at Wukesong Indoor Stadium, inducing a state of euphoria for thousands of die-hard Usher fans and casual R&B lovers alike. Classic hits such as “Confessions,” “Yeah” and “Love in the Club” kicked off the concert and got the crowd bopping their heads, albeit confined to their seats and under the scrutiny of ranks of security guards. Usher then launched into performances from his new album Raymond v. Raymond, including instant crowd favorites “Hey Daddy,” “Lil Freak” and “OMG.”

Abandoning their usual decorum, Chinese fan girls went crazy waving and screaming for the R&B superstar’s explosive performance. Their dreams of witnessing a duet between an Eastern and Western artist were realized when Usher was joined on stage by Asian pop sensation Wang Leehom, China’s favorite pretty boy. In his first-ever collaboration with a Chinese artist, Usher showed off his Chinese singing skills - not bad, though conveniently muffled by temporarily dodgy sound (the sound was otherwise pretty good throughout) - as the dynamic duo performed Wang’s "My One and Only."
The concert ran for approximately 90 minutes on pure unadulterated endorphins for Usher and his audience, as the musical superstar belted out songs with sultry vocals and MichaelJackson-inspired dance moves. Fully defying the stereotype that hip-hop artists can’t perform live, Usher absolutely met up to, and perhaps exceeded, the Beijing audience’s high expectations, driven up by Beyonce’s bootylicious concert last November. In fact, about the only complaint we had was that Usher didn't get his shirt off. Ah well, maybe next time.

I went to the Usher concert and it was disappointing. The concert's start time was 8pm, but I assumed like most concerts it would start later like 8:30pm. When I arrived, Usher actually breezed through several of his most popular songs instead of singing the full rendition. He also wore sunglasses the entire performance. Most disappointing though, was at 9:45pm he said "I love you Beijing", the lights on the stage went out, and then the lights in Wukesong stadium went on. Then the LED screens stated that the program was finished. I've never been to a concert that was so short and didn't have an encore. Usher didn't even say goodbye! Although what I saw was good, in hindsight the concert was a disappointment and the promoters did a lame job. Plus, they oversold tickets as the seats, aisles and stairways were packed with people.

Great show! But very short

Ummmm, did I not get the memo? Usher isn't a hip-hop artist, therefore there is no stereotype to defy!
