Isofit Pilates Studio Will Straighten You Up

While touring the new Isofit Pilates studio, the first in Beijing, I have my posture corrected suddenly by owner Lili Schloss. At first, I am surprised by the sudden touch. But the finesse with which her hands align my spine with my hips is impressive. And the tension in my lower back does go away. This, I determine, is quality customer care. Located in the Upper East Side complex, just off of East Fourth Ring North Road, Isofit reinvigorates the usual fitness center with a spa-inspired look.

The shower stalls are spacious, with a changing room attached for extra privacy. Orchids are scattered throughout the studio like Easter eggs. And Schloss clearly got the memo that the color green is relaxing. The walls and even the equipment sport this verdant hue. The studio is replete with Pilates equipment, from wunda chairs to trapeze tables. The center is currently offering private (RMB 750), semi-private (RMB 500), and group sessions (RMB 180-RMB 250).

A newbie to Pilates, I was given a personal assessment by Schloss, who also teaches at the studio. Having trained for sixteen years, Schloss has the intimate manner of a person used to touching strangers. She ran me through a gamut of exercises – arm arcs, bridging, flexion, and footwork. The initial fitness assessment (450 RMB) works to target your strengths and weaknesses. The instructor is then better informed of how to train your body. Schloss noted my stiff spine, hyper-extended knees, and uneven shoulders.

As for group classes, the studio offers Pilates mat, Gyrokinesis, yoga, and reformer sessions. The lessons are conducted in both Chinese and English and the instructors are all internationally qualified. The schedule can be found on their website and pre-booking is required.

I sat in on a Gyrokinesis class, which was led by instructor Jasmine. Aware of my limited experience, Jasmine first taught the discrete steps to each exercise. Once mastered, we would then add the breathing rhythm and pick up the pace until our movements became as fluid as a dance. Intimate class sizes – our group only had two students – allow the instructor to keep an eye on each person. Though we never left our seated position, by the end of the class, everyone was breathing heavy.

With a lively staff, calming atmosphere, and air that smells faintly floral, Isofit offers an experience that is not only relaxing, but transformative. I walked out with a straight back, feeling taller already.
