'Furious' Drivers Charged in Ferrari-Lamborghini Crash

The drivers in an illegal street race between involving a Ferrari and a Lamborghini have been charged in connection with the mid-April accident, and face a maximum sentence of six months' imprisonment, according the Beijing News.

The charges were handed down by the Chaoyang District Court Monday, namely reckless driving and excessive speeding. The two drivers were only identified by their surnames, Tang and Yu. The case is scheduled to go to court in June.

Given the publicity surrounding the case, Tang and Yu could face the maximum. No major injuries were reported to either drivers or passengers. A large section of the tunnel's wall was also damaged.

The crash occurred just as the fast car film Furious 7 was being released in China, leading to speculation the drivers were attempting to imitate the movie's automobile antics. Furious is now China's number one all-time box office hit.

In February 2014, a twenty-something driver was killed when he wrecked his Ferrari on the Airport Expressway. A white Lamborghini caught fire and burned in September 2013, backing up traffic on the Fourth Ring Road for kilometers. A more notorious Ferrari crash took place in March 2012.
