Get Your Buy-One-Get-One Free Meat Pie Fix at Godfathers Every Tuesday

If you’ve never checked out Godfathers Bar and Restaurant, it’s a little place next door to Caravan Moroccan Bistrot that has been taking the embassy area by storm with their yummy pizzas and wide selection of comfort foods. This bar-cum-restaurant was launched by the Australian husband and wife duo of Heather and Louis Jacquot over a year ago. We tried their fish and chips at that time and were more than happy to find a venue to dish it up right, with generous portions and an authentic taste. Recently they have been tackling another crust-laden savory dish native to their land down under: meat pies.

The duo claim that these are the best meat pies in town (Editor's note: I am in no position to confirm or deny this claim because I'm more of a cherry pie man myself), and currently have four flavors for you to devour, including beef; beef with cheese; pork with apple sauce; and chicken with leek sauce. We sat down with the traditional beef (RMB 65) for a short correspondence, short because upon discovering that it was loaded with sirloin steak it disappeared.

For best results, gorge yourself on what is the spectacular Australian traditional food of savory meat pies on Tuesday nights, when they are served two-for-the-price-of-one. In addition to this Tuesday deal, Godfathers have also unleashed a barrage of other deals and happy hour specials throughout the week, including BOGO pizzas on Wednesday nights, half-price on Australian beers all day and night on Aussie day Fridays, and finally, every evening from 6-10pm Tsingtao beer is only RMB 10.

Godfathers and the venerable Caravan (next door) are turning this somewhat desolate area of Guanghua Lu, filled with Russian restaurants, hotpot, and, of course, Maggies, with some much-needed comfort and great hospitality. Could this be the beginning of a massive overhaul to the embassy area, soon making it a destination for booze hounds and foodies alike? Likely not yet, but it’s a strong start.
