5 Things to Taste, Smell, Touch, Hear, and See, May 31-Jun 2

Beijing can be an overstimulating place to live, to say the least. Let’s be real: sometimes even our sixth sense (the one that tells you when that stick of chuan'r will make you sick for the next two days) gets a decent workout. With such a wide variety of events, restaurants, and gigs to attend, we suggest bathing each of your five senses in one, if not all, of the nourishing goings-on below.

Taste

Jun 1: Philippine Culture Festival
We love all kinds of food markets (as if our yearly Burger, Pizza, or Hot and Spicy festivals hadn't already made that obvious). This Saturday, stuff yourself with delicacies from the Philipines accompanied by free-flow drinks. Once your belly is full, and you've got a decent buzz going, try your luck at Karaoke challenge. RMB 178 (four hours of selected free-flow drinks and RMB 20 food voucher included). 10am-6pm. Pan Pacific Beijing

Smell

Jun 1: Beijing Sino 10s
Rugby, as they say, is a hooligans game played by gentlemen. Or is it a gentle game for hooligans? Either way, the biggest rugby tournament in North China is happening in Beijing this weekend, with teams coming from all over the country to compete. Come along and watch, cheer, party on the rooftop, and see where the night takes you! Maybe you'll find yourself answering the call for new team members next time. Free. 9am-5pm. Dulwich College

Touch

Jun 2: Flamenco Open Class
Do you feel that? The electric energy in the air? The tension, passion, adrenaline so dense that you could cut it with a knife? Join Sevilla native Elena this Sunday for a taste of fiery Spanish heritage in the form of flamenco dance. Elena has been dancing flamenco since she was six years old, and has her own show in the Madrid theatre coming out this year. RMB 100. 5pm. Guanghua Lu Soho

Hear

Jun 1: Toconoma China Tour
Beijing is truly #blessed with Japanese bands these days. Toconoma is a funk and jazz quartet that is on a mission to get everyone dancing. The band has been rocking out on Japanese stages since 2008, but this tour marks their first shows in mainland China. RMB 180, RMB 150 (advance). 9pm. Omni Space

See

Jun 1: "People's Park" Documentary Screening
"People's Park" is a spellbinding single-shot documentary from 2012, which takes the viewer on a journey through the gigantic People's park in Chengdu. To watch it is to immerse yourself into an unbroken trip of waltzing dancers, karaoke singers, buzzing cicadas, and the contemporary world of Chinese self-expression. RMB 40. 2pm. Langyuan Vintage
