Beijing Risk Status Is Back to Level Three: Here's What That Means

Beijing has surpassed the milestone of zero new cases for 14 days for the first time since the exposure to the novel coronavirus in the Xinfadi market caused a second COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, officials have reduced the city’s risk status to level three.

The reduced status does not, of course, mean a complete return to normalcy – measures such as temperature taking, use of the Health Kit app, and compulsory mask-wearing in crowded areas will continue to be implemented, officials explained at a press conference.

However, several adjustments will be rolled out now that the third risk level has finally arrived. Firstly, both indoor and outdoor attractions, including parks, libraries, museums, and galleries will be able to allow visitors up to 50 percent capacity. Even more exciting, however, is that the city will also allow large-scale events with up to 500 people and may allow more attendees if circumstances permit.

More than anything, the status adjustment signals that more relaxation of restrictions is to come following further review. Cinemas throughout China have now opened up to viewers, and though Beijing’s cinephiles are being forced to wait a bit longer for a real theater experience, officials at the press conference hinted that cinema openings are now under review thanks to the adjustment, as well as the resumption of live sporting events and performances.

In another good sign of what’s to come in the near future, a number of Sanlitun bars and restaurants have announced their reopenings from today, including Q Mex, Daruma, Bottega, and El Barrio, indicating that the status adjustment will mean renewed dining and nightlife for that area.
