WeChat Official Accounts Turns 10 Years Old Today!

When WeChat was first launched 11 years ago today, few would have thought that this humble little app would completely revolutionize the way people living in China communicate and use digital devices. Indeed, WeChat has become an essential part of everyday life and has over one billion monthly active users as of 2022, according to parent company Tencent, all that in just 11 years!

Today marks the 10th year that WeChat Official Accounts were launched, which of course started with WeChat's own official account. These accounts have become a powerful tool that have totally changed the way businesses and media interact with clients and readers.

The notice reads:

Hi, all

Thanks to your efforts, the WeChat official accounts platform is online and already available to sign up for. You can visit mpweixinqq.com to check it out.

The official accounts are aimed at users who have followers or promotional channels. On the website messages can be sent to followers based on user groups and users' locations.

More information will be given after the platform's launch.

WeChat's own official account quickly reached 200 million registered followers only six months after it was launched. Today, the number of official accounts on WeChat in China has grown to more than 20 million! Even the Beijinger has felt the impact, as at the end of 2018, we said goodbye to print magazines and went completely digital, only publishing posts on our website and official WeChat account.

Are you a big fan of WeChat official accounts? Has this function changed the way you access news or stories? Let us know in the comments!
