A Talk With a Beijing Burger Fanatic: American Expat Jarrod Rogers

With both the Beijinger’s Juicy Burger Month and Juicy Burger Cup happening this month, we decided to talk to a few burger fanatics based in the capital -- all of which are the most active members of our Beijing Burger Lovers WeChat groups -- to find out more about their favorite food.

We start with Jarrod Rogers, an American expat originally from the US state of Oklahoma who has been living in Beijing for about six and a half years.

How often do you go out for burgers?
My wife and I have slowed down on burgers, but we still go out at least twice a week for them.

What's your favorite Beijing burger and why?
My favorite burger in Beijing is probably “it may contain bacon” from Toothsome Chocolate Emporium at Universal Citywalk. It’s a thick beef patty with proper bacon and pork belly. There’s a wonderful sauce, cheese and a huge brioche bun. The whole thing is just perfect with a chocolate Coke.

When looking for the perfect burger, what's your criteria?
I want well-seasoned meat. It has to have flavor and it can’t be too dry either. The bread is important as well, I love a good quality bun and I prefer it toasted. I do enjoy a flavorful cheese too. Mustard or mayonnaise is a good compliment to the burger, but not necessary if the meat has the proper flavor.

Any burgers you're looking to try over this month?
I’m craving the Buffalo chicken burger from Larry the Bird, it is always on point.

Who do you think should win Burger Cup 2022 and why?
I’d love to see a place like 3 Little Pigs by Andy’s Craft Sausages win, they remind me of home. 3 Little Pigs makes fantastic burgers, but they are often overshadowed by the big players in town.
