New Urban Lighting to Highlight Historical and Modern Sites

The Beijing Municipal Urban Management Committee recently issued the “Urban Lighting Development Plan of Beijing” as part of the 15th Five-Year Plan. It lays out the city’s plan to use nighttime lighting to highlight 14 important cultural and historical sights and modern areas of interest.

There is a major focus on the Central Axis, but other locations, such as Wangjing, the Grand Canal in Tongzhou, and sections of the Great Wall, are also included.

This push to develop Beijing’s nighttime illumination serves not only to enhance the city’s aesthetic and cultural appeal and to improve the quality of life for the city’s inhabitants, but it also represents yet another component of Beijing’s campaign to become an attractive, tourist-friendly international city.
