Pinggu District Great Wall to Open Next Year
Restoration is underway on a part of the Great Wall located in Pinggu District. The still unopened Jiangjunguan section of the Ming dynasty Great Wall stretches 53.67km and contains more than 270 historic sites along its length. It is considered the most original and complete wild Great Wall in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
In recent years, Pinggu District has carried out a number of operations, including archaeological excavations and operations to strengthen portions of the wall. In preparation for the Jiangjunguan section’s opening to the public, authorities and experts are also in the process of carrying out reversible infrastructure placement and environmental remediation. Chief among the considerations for those involved in the project is the question of how to turn the cultural heritage of the Great Wall into a new driving force for rural development.
The Jiangjunguan Great Wall section is expected to open to the public by the end of 2026.
JD.com Opens First Store in Beijing
On Dec 17, JD.com opened its first physical supermarket in Beijing. Called the Jingdong Discount Supermarket, it's located in Xishanhui in Mentougou and offers a range of the typical products one would expect to find in a Chinese supermarket, along with some Western and Western-inspired items, but at extremely affordable prices.
Shoppers noted some amusing sales strategies as well, such as socks being priced not by pair or pack, but instead being sold by weight. The price of a particular selection of socks is RMB 26.7 per kilo. The store helpfully informs shoppers that 1 jin of mid-calf versions of these socks comes to around 17 pairs, and 1 jin of high-calf socks comes to about 15 pairs. One cost-conscious shopper delighted in the realization that a single pair of socks could cost, on average, about RMB 1.
Cheap socks aside, the store appears to have had a successful opening, with long lines and big crowds eager to explore the abundance on offer and take advantage of some good deals before the new year.
