A Taste of India in Beijing: Vasant Mela Returns Mar 14

Although Beijing has recently been dusted with a late burst of snow, the city is already beginning to look ahead to warmer days. With temperatures expected to climb to around 16 degrees C next Saturday, it's the perfect moment to step outside and welcome the changing season at one of the capital's most colorful cultural celebrations: Vasant Mela.

Returning to the capital on Sat, Mar 14, this annual spring fair organized by the Embassy of India brings together a vibrant mix of Indian music, dance, food, crafts and family-friendly activities, transforming the venue into a lively showcase of the country's rich traditions.

To learn more about what attendees can expect from Vasant Mela 2026, we spoke with Neethu Rajan, director of the Indian Cultural Centre, about how the festival continues to grow and what special highlights await this year.

This year marks the fourth edition of Vasant Mela, are there any special new experiences attendees can expect this year?
Vasant Mela is the Embassy of India's annual spring festival in Beijing - a day when we celebrate Indian culture and welcome the new season together. In many ways, we try to showcase a "mini India" in all its vibrance, in one space.

Every year, we try to make Vasant Mela feel both familiar and fresh. This year, we are introducing a few performances that have not been staged here before, including a dance adaptation of India's beloved classic, Shakuntalam. We are also bringing together folk traditions from across India — from Rajasthani dance and Baul music of Bengal to traditions from Uttarakhand, Manipur, Odisha and Maharashtra. It's rare to see such diversity on one stage in a single day.

There will be free Yoga workshops led by experienced Indian teachers, along with a free Garba dance workshop where visitors can learn this famous folk tradition from Gujarat.

We are also hosting a light-hearted interactive quiz with spot prizes, and the Children's Corner has been expanded to make it an easy and enjoyable family outing.

Many of the popular elements from previous years will continue as well. And of course, the stalls - with Indian food, crafts, textiles and wellness products - remain a big part of the experience.

What are some of the key highlights from this year's cultural lineup?
This year's cultural lineup really reflects the diversity of India - classical, folk and contemporary. There will be strong classical elements, including Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Kathak and Manipuri — each with its own distinct technique and aesthetic. These are presented alongside vibrant regional traditions such as Rajasthani Ghoomar, Garhwali and Kumaoni folk dances from Uttarakhand, energetic Bhangra from Punjab, Odia folk like Dalkhai, and the mystic Baul music of Bengal. Tagore Nritya also forms part of the eastern segment.

And of course, Bollywood is always popular. The singing and dancing keep the energy up!

Food is always a big draw to Vasant Mela. What kinds of regional Indian cuisines and specialties can visitors expect to taste this year?
Food is definitely one of the most exciting parts of Vasant Mela. It's a wonderful opportunity for Beijing residents to taste the diversity of India in one place.

Visitors can try India's regional cuisines, as well as street food and festive snacks. We will also have pavilions run by the Embassy Ladies' Club, making it community-driven.

Beyond performances and food, the fair also showcases traditional handicrafts and cultural experiences. What can guests discover or take home this time?
Visitors can discover some distinctive elements this year. We have products specially arranged from India, including selections supported by the Central Silk Board, which promotes India's rich silk heritage.

There are also items presented under the "One District One Product" initiative. This initiative highlights a unique craft or specialty from each district of India, helping preserve regional traditions and support local artisans.

In addition, visitors can explore Indian tea, coffee and spices. There will also be Ayurvedic wellness products and information on Yoga.

We will also have henna artists offering traditional mehndi designs. Henna is a natural plant-based dye used in India to create intricate patterns on the hands during festivals and celebrations.

There will also be a selection of textiles, jewellery and decorative items from different parts of India for those who would like to browse and buy.

The event is family-friendly, can you tell us a bit more about what children's activities will be there?
Yes, Vasant Mela is designed to be enjoyed by the entire family. Throughout the day, children can enjoy:

  • Bollywood dance sessions conducted by a reputed teacher
  • Fun Hindi language classes
  • Storytelling sessions
  • Yoga sessions specially designed for young participants

These activities run at multiple time slots, so families can participate comfortably throughout the day. The aim is to help the children not only watch India's culture but also actively experience it.

If someone could only experience one or two things at Vasant Mela 2026, what would you recommend they not miss?
That's always a difficult question, because Vasant Mela is really meant to be experienced as a whole. But if I had to suggest one or two things, I would say don't miss the cultural performances - especially the unique ones we are presenting this year.

I would also recommend staying until the end of the day. There is a surprise experience that brings everyone together in a very spontaneous way - it captures the spirit of celebration quite beautifully.

Beyond the stage, I would encourage visitors to try the Garba workshop if they can. It's for all age groups, and it's always nice to see people step into the circle and dance together.

Families should certainly visit the Children's Corner, and of course, take time to enjoy the food and explore the stalls. Very often, people come planning to stay for an hour - and end up spending the whole day.

Finally, do you have any other cultural events planned at the embassy, and how can people stay up to date on any future events?
We have a packed calendar of cultural events, with at least one event every month, sometimes even more. In addition to these special events, we also offer regular yoga and Indian classical dance classes, all led by seasoned experts.
