Peaches & Cream: Tantalize Your Sound Buds

It’s not easy being Peaches. Electroclash, glamrock, synthetic punk, rap, retro and futuristic all at the same time – and that’s not even getting into her self-described male-female dual identity. Fortunately, all of the above makes the Canadian singer, songwriter and producer one of the most innovative and interesting artists out there. Before her April 24 show at Yugong Yishan, this Goddess of Shock Value shares a few words of wisdom with Lisa Liang.

Can you describe a Peaches show to people who haven’t seen one before?
Well, I can’t say what will blow people’s minds at the show, but I know that I always give my audience 500 percent, and I have a gift for performing!

Where did the name Peaches come from?
The name came from a Nina Simone song called “Four Women.” At the end of the song, Nina says the name of the fourth woman, Peaches, with such passion that I wanted her to be singing that to me. I knew she wouldn’t change the lyrics, so instead I changed my name.

Three words you love to use on a daily basis?
Satisfied, sexy and hot.

And three words you overuse on a daily basis?
F*%#, sh!? and a*#@+#*.

What’s one thing your fans don’t know about you?
They don’t know that all I eat is vegetables.

Your songs are known for their brash lyrics. Do you consider yourself an aggressive artist?
No, I consider myself a very normal, healthy person who is confident and open.

You’re reported to have “hermaphrodite envy” and believe all people have both male and female in them. What’s your own ratio of male-female?
Oh, it varies. Right now, I would say it’s 63-37, female-male.

Taste Peaches at 9pm, Saturday, April 24; Yugong Yishan. RMB 200.
