A Solitary Flicker of Neon: La Fite British Exotic Bar at Sanlitun

Not as ridiculous as its oxymoronic name suggests, La Fite is a solitary flicker of neon in the dark back alleyways that remind us where Sanlitun Soho sprang from.

It’s a blast from the past – the 17th-century European past. Huge ornate couches occupy over half the floor space; oil paintings and framed “antique” pistols dominate the walls in similar fashion. You half expect to see a gentleman with a monocle twirling his handlebar mustache and requesting a reasonably priced glass of red wine from their generous menu.

The rest of us might order a startlingly tasteful daiquiri (RMB 40) or a few bottles of Guinness (RMB 50); all beers are buy-two-get-one-free. Avoid the rooftop for now – its sparse furnishings and green turf are a definite work in progress.
