Talking Travel: Holiday Hodge Podge

Talking Travel is the Beijinger's weekly travel guide to great deals, interesting destinations, and weekend getaways.

A bit of a mixed bag this week. No significant bargains have emerged for the post-Christmas period. It is high season, after all. However, there are a few interesting tidbits nonetheless.

Asian carriers are attempting to attract passengers by increasing free baggage allowances, according to The Wall Street Journal. Airlines that have embraced the larger allowances, including Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines, see the move as a way of increasing passenger interest without directly discounting fares. Most Asian passengers continue to boost flights, both in terms of total routes and the number of flights serving each destination.

New World Hotels has launched its "Warm Winter Welcome" promotion at numerous locations in Asia, with many in China. From December 14, 2013 through February 14, 2014, stay two nights at any New World Hotel and receive 50 percent discount every night from the third night onwards. Each package includes complimentary buffet breakfast and free wireless Internet. Not too bad for peak season.

That's it for this week. Next week, we'll look at the destination that is still the ultimate weekend getaway: Hong Kong. Until then, one road flat safe.
