Beijing News: 3 New Beijing Subway Sections Open

Beijing is a happening city! Don't miss a thing with our weekend roundup of the latest news.

New sections of three Beijing subway lines have opened for trial operation today:

  • Line 6: Lucheng–Luyang
  • Line 17: Workers’ Stadium–Shilihe
  • Line 18: Malianwa–Tiantongyuan East

The new Line 6 section is a small one-stop extension of the line to the southeast. The new Line 17 section runs north to south and connects the upper and lower sections of the line. The new Line 18 section runs east to west between Haidian and Changping districts.

Line 18 is of particular note. The trains are equipped with China’s first carbon fiber heated seats, increasing rider comfort in the winter. There are information screens by the platform doors that display real-time information about trains’ arrival and capacity. Additionally, all stations are equipped with facilities such as accessible toilets and mother-and-child rooms.

There are also special convenience services in the stations on Line 18, such as coffee shops and self-service convenience stores across the line, as well as dozens of self-service food and beverage machines and charging machines. There are also a variety of businesses providing storage lockers, flower lockers and robot-powered drink stations.

As of this morning, there are now 909 kilometers of urban rail transit in Beijing and 30 subway lines.
