Community Matters: Beijing is Trying to Curb Migration
Check out this informative report from Bloomberg about Beijing's failing clampdown on people migrating to the capital at alarming speeds.
Beijing currently sustains 21.1 million people, a population that has more than doubled since 2000. Bloomberg states that it took the largest city in the US a century to double to its current size.
In order to restrict this rapid growth, the municipal government are implementing limits on services to those without a residency permit, and moving markets and hospitals out of the city center. Better schools and job opportunities are what lure the masses from less serviced provinces to the capital, but also add a fair amount of stress to its infrastructure.
While Beijing is attempting to repel the migrant class, Shanghai is experimenting with ways to boost efficiency and improve services offered to residents. Last year they implemented a point system that allows non-locals to prove their worth based on their education and professional skills. Read more about that here.
