62 Down, 2 To Go: The Local, Slow Boat Meet in 2015 Burger Cup Championship Match

There’ll be a new Burger Cup champion this year as upstart Slow Boat has toppled the only winner we’ve ever known in the Burger Cup – three-time champ Home Plate – in a close Final Four race.

Meanwhile, in the other match of the Final Four, The Local avenged last year’s Final Four defeat at the hands of Great Leap Brewing by narrowly outpolling them this year.

This sets us up for a final battle featuring The Local vs Slow Boat to see who will be the next champion … and you have a mere 48 hours to help us decide:

Get in there and vote before noon Wednesday to crown the new champ.

The two finalists share a lot in common: Both venues are headed by expat Americans (so they know their burgers); both operate single-location venues (which usually indicates attention to detail); both are also known as drinking establishments; and both have signature burgers that stand out as unique in the crowded Beijing burger market.

Home Plate, meanwhile, takes on Great Leap for the bronze in the same ballot.

On its path to the final match, Slow Boat sailed past The Smokeyard, Nola, 4corners, Union, and finally, Home Plate. The Local, meanwhile, survived challenges from The Bookworm, Café Flatwhite, Q Mex, Blue Frog, and Great Leap.

And now for a closer look at the two burgers vying for the title:

The Local Bar and Grill's The Dry Rub Avocado Burger
One hundred percent imported Aussie beef, seasoned with The Local's mildly spicy dry rub, topped with lettuce, house salsa, cheese, and half a ripe avocado, served on a buttery, not-too-sweet bun. Served with a small salad and a choice of fries, onion rings or sweet potato fries. Best accompanied by a beer margarita.

Slow Boat Brewery & Taproom's Fryburger
An all-beef patty topped by beer-battered fries and a blanket of cheese, dressed with Slow Boat's home-made “Ayi-ioli,” served on a lightly grilled sesame seed bun. Served with a generous slice of pickle. Best served with one of Slow Boat's own brews, such as the Captain’s Pale Ale, Monkey’s Fist IPA or the Slutty Mermaid Triple IPA (10.8 percent).

Meanwhile, we asked you last round to name the first words that came to mind when thinking about burgers, and here were your Top 10 responses:

1. Beef
2. Cheese
3. Meat
4. Juicy
5. Delicious
6. Good
7. America
8. Fries
9. Bun

Of course there was the smattering of unflattering words as well, such as “Fat”, “Greasy,” “Obesity” and “Cowdeath”. Then there’s those that need to rethink their relationship to burgers in general (I’m talking to you, those that responded  “God”,  “chicken chest” and “Supreme Court Justice”).

For those of you keeping track at home, here is our updated wall poster:

The Local reports that they will be offering their burger with fries and a salad for RMB 45 (usually 68) tonight until midnight, and then tomorrow from noon to 5pm. Shortly after that they hand the reigns over to the comedy show that takes plance Tuesday, when the promotion will conclude (though you can still order the burgers at the comedy show at the regular price).
