Monkey Around & Enjoy the Scenery in Taiping Village
Shidu Scenic Area in Fangshan District has always been a favorite suburban destination for Beijing tourists, but just north of this scenic area is Taipingcun, a hidden gem with astounding scenery that is, quite interestingly, less frequented by tourists. What are some of the spots you can see in this little slice of paradise?
Taiping Tianchi Natural Scenic Area
Located in the west side of Taipingcun, this is one spot you don't want to miss. It is believed that spring water flows continuously all year round in this area and gradually forms a pool of clear water in the valley, hence the name 太平天池 Tàipíng tiānchí (lit.: Calm and Tranquil Heavenly Pool).
Looking upon the water in the pool, it's almost as calm and tranquil as the name suggests, save for the fish, wild ducks and geese swimming about in the waters.
Along the way, visitors will feel like they are walking in a forest with natural air conditioning thanks to cool air from the water gushing down from the streams; a perfect way for anyone looking to escape the heat.
Not only can visitors enjoy the scenery, but they can also taste some village delicacies like braised mushrooms with chicken, fried fish, and salads made with some of the freshest ingredients.
Be sure to grab their 太平月饼 Tàipíng yuèbǐng, a round bun filled with walnuts and sesames coated in brown sugar. The texture is crisp, sweet and soft, and it tastes heavenly when eaten fresh out of the oven.

Happy Macaque Valley猕猴谷
Less than 10 minutes' drive from Taiping Tianchi Scenic Area is Happy Macaque Valley, where visitors will be able to spot macaques of all sizes hopping about.
As soon as you enter through the area's gates, you'll be able to spot these little tan monkeys running around in groups of three or four. But just be careful, because these macaques are eager for food, and they can sometimes get a bit aggressive. They might even try to grab your bag or swing from behind to grab anything you have that looks like food.
These macaques are already fed regularly. However, if you insist on trying your luck feeding them, don't be surprised if they continue pestering you for more food even if you've run out!
