Clarification: There was some ambiguity in the odds/evens markings on the calendar above. The calendar has been amended to reflect the numbers that are restricted from traveling on that calendar day -- so that on Nov 9, for instance, license plates ending in even numbers are restricted from driving (and hence only odds can be on the road)

Apparently the marathon hearing on the subway price plans just ended, and 23 of the 25 people that were selected to express their opinion chose Proposal B.

If this plan holds (I guess now it's gotta be rubber stamped by some other bunch of officials), here's what the new rates will look like (adapted from Global Times graphic):

I agree with the Spanish fellow. This poll does not make any sense at all! Most of the people I know, who worked in international companies, have left China because of the pollution issues. Salaries in China cant be compared with those in developed countries.

Where did they take the data from?? Was it provided by Chinese Officers? Biggrin

The HSBC workers were really bored these days ... it´s better if they keep doing accounts instead of confusing people with this rubish ... if USA is in the 30th position and UK in number 33 ... this report has no sense! (and I´m not american or english)

Article edited to include detail from this morning's newspaper:

This morning's Beijing News added that there will be a live discussion at 2:30pm today (Tuesday Oct 28) to settle the final as-to-yet undetermined portion of the pricing: whether the initial price will be RMB 2 (for the first 3km) or RMB 3 (for the first 6km)

Additionally, bus prices are also being discussed -- the choices under consideration are RMB 1 for first 5km or RMB 2 for first 10 km.

We were very pleased to receive this email regarding Mr. Shapiro's passing:

Sir,

Ref.: "American translator and long time Beijinger Sydney Shapiro dies at 98"

Mr. Shapiro was a singular person who led a remarkable life.

Back in the early 80's, I called him to get information about antique Jewish documents in China. We even spoke in our mother tongue, Yiddish. I also explained to him my interest in Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who saved scores of Hungarian Jews during WWII. He too, was a great admiror of Wallenberg and all the rescuers of the Holocaust.

He made a strong impression on me. A man of great curiosity, ingenuity and intellectual skills.

His amazing life and political views stirred a lot of passion and controversy.

I am sure he will be missed by many.

Please post this stuff earlier. It is Sunday, and the next time I can check out these pizza places would be next weekend Friday or Saturday, 10/31 or 11/1

So post these articles/promo pages a week earlier. That way we have time to plan and join outside work hours (which is normally during the week).

I've talked to many people about using Taobao as a foreigner and I've had no success, even now. Taobao has an option now to put in a passport number rather than a Chinese ID number. However, after putting in all of the correct information it still does not work. The screenshots you show in your post are very easy to follow and step-by-step, however, I do not see the same pages you do. After I finish selecting my bank, the next page that I am re-directed to is not the same as yours and therefore I cannot follow the steps from there. I do not seem to know what the issue is. I may try JD next since there has been no success with Taobao.
