Interesting that many countries with slower rates of economic growth have managed greater life expectancies. Just shows once again that unrestrained economic growth all of the time is not actually the best model for improving people's lives - sometimes a slower pace achieves better results.
As a dog owner, this is a scary story to hear! I've heard about dog stealing in the US, but it's mainly pit bulls and fighting-type dogs that get stolen.
Our dog was stolen at the Kempinski about 2 years ago. He was walking around freely, as one could see on the CCTV footage. Then a Chinese person came and our dog, of friendly nature received him without caution. Next thing we know, the guy grabs the dog and takes off. After going to the police, and reviewing the footage they weren't 'able' to do anything. The actual owner of the dog, who was at the police also was the head of one of the chamber of commerce here - that didn't help. So yes, WATCH OUT!
Yes, the Stumble Inn is offering a Thanksgiving meal all day on Thursday. The menu looks great! They are also making seasonal merchandise, the entire proceeds of which will go to the Roundabout Charity Distribution Store in Shunyi. The money will be used to purchase quilts for elderly people desperately in need of warm bedding and clothing. Cost is RMB 150 for three courses, which includes a lot of food. Children under 12 - RMB 100. Reservations are suggested. Call 010-64177794. Should be lots of fun, with good food and for a great cause!
"Anyone know if there are any places offering take-out tofurkey?"
Both Baihe and Pure Lotus have nice vegetarian ducks. It's supposed to be duck not turkey but it's been so long for me that I wouldn't know the difference and I find them just as tasty. Baihe's comes in the shape of an actual bird instead of the Tofurkey ball and either of these options are a lot more "environmentally friendly" than having a Tofurkey imported for just one meal. That's our plan for Thanksgiving, hope it helps!
Maison Boulud is also doing Thanksgiving, RMB 428 + 15% for dine in and RMB 1888 for a takeaway turkey with trimmings that will feed 8-10

Congratulations to Barry, Matthew, Danni, Tamara and Gonzal, who each won themselves a double pass to Cosmo this Saturday by correctly identifying East Germany as the former Eastern Bloc nation that helped build 798.
while giving thanks, keep in mind there are those that are less fortunate. Here's a charity event you can think about giving to / volunteering for:

As we all have noticed, the weather has been getting colder and colder every day in Beijing. We also see a lot of homeless people wandering around on the street. They don’t have a place to go home to, and they don’t know where to find their next meal. Therefore, I am asking you to join me in helping deliver a meal, a scarf, and a pair of gloves to 100 homeless people in total next Thursday, November 25, 2010, starting at 6 PM.
The plan is to raise 10000 RMB to buy the meals, gloves, and scarves. So far I have raised almost 6000 RMB, and would greatly appreciate if you can donate anything you can to help us reach our 10000 RMB goal. I am also recruiting volunteers to deliver food next Thursday. I will need 20 volunteers, whom I will divide into 10 groups, who will be in charge of distributing food in one particular area. Each group will carry 10 set meals (2 dishes with meat, 2 vegetable dishes) to 10 different homeless people in that area. We will also ask each person if we can take picture of them to send to our donors as a follow-up document of our work. If time and money allows it, we will send out more food to shelters for people in need.
I will keep all the invoices and receipts, in order to prove that I have spent all the money donated on people who really need it. I guarantee that I will not take the money for any personal or unnecessary use.
I really appreciate any donations that you can make or any time you can volunteer to this cause. If you are interested, please call me at [1368-1378-153] or email me atapeacefulwarrior20@gmail.com.
Please tell your friends about this too, so we can provide meals and outerwear for as many people as we can in this cold winter.
I'd be careful going to "School".. the bar staff is getting a reputation for getting into fights with customers a bit too often these days.
3 beatdowns over the pat week.

Sobering article. I actually didn't know that cancer was China's #1 killer, I thought it was heart disease. That NYTimes article sources the 2007 China government survey about cancer deaths

RobertHKUST, what type of dog did you have?

How about lambs? They're kinda cute, but no puppy dog eyes. Can we chow down them?

Right, unlike people who anonymously post comments on websites that make sweeping generalizations slagging off other people.
If you think this band sucks so much, why did you read the post?
Re: Carsick Cars Announce Split
So true.
Who cares about a crap band breaking up and then "reforming" immediately with a "different line-up".
Pathetic, attention-whoring.
Chinese pop bands suck.
