Wolf Totem Accused of Misrepresenting Mongolian Culture

Wolf Totem, the popular film directed by French director Jean Jacques Annaud, has been criticized by Guo Xuebo, a renowned Chinese novelist and member of the China Writers’ Association, for misrepresenting Mongolian culture.

The film depicts a Beijing student, Chen Zhen, being dispatched to Inner Mongolia to work in 1967. During this time, his connection to nature strengthens and he learns more about wolves and their relationship with humans, later deciding to raise a wolf cub.

But How Will We Know? National Tourism Administration to Dump Public Toilet Star Ratings

Your opportunities to use a five-star toilet are running out. The National Tourism Administration (NTA) has announced it will flush its current public toilet rating system, in favor of a new, non-star protocol later this year. 

Instead, the rating system will become 1A to 3A, with 1A being where you will ask your visiting mother to wait until you get home, to 3A, where, while you may not want to eat maple walnut ice cream off the floor, it will be sufficiently clean to be satisfactory for general use.

First Glance: Park 17, Courtyard 4

The latest to join Beijing's growing number of Italian restaurants is Park 17, a sleek, industrial-chic space in the the burgeoning Courtyard 4 area of south Sanlitun (standing outside looking at The Local, Park 17 is just to the right). Au courant filament bulbs light a medium-size room furnished simply with blond wood and grey-painted walls. No table cloths here, they want guests to focus on food and enjoyment rather than stuffy fine dining.
