Are you the next OJ Simpson? Beijing Guardians Touch Down Tonight
Have you ever cursed the lack of American football in China? Sure, we get visits from cheerleaders once a year, a decent turnout for the Super Bowl and there’s flag football but there’s nothing for fans of playing the full-blooded game.
Tonight that changes. The Beijing Guardians are holding an information night from 7pm at All-Star in Solana. If you’ve never played before that’s OK as Head Coach, Tim Jones, will be introducing the game to newcomers and outlining his plans for the new team. His aim is to create and train a full-contact team for competition in China and the US. Tonight, Jones will also explain his coaching philosophy and Athletes Performance, a training system used by many champion sports stars.
After three months of planning the Guardians are now ready to fill their roster and begin training in late January. The goal is to be ready to play a competitive intercollegiate or lower-tier college team in the US by September.
The team is open to all, both Chinese and foreign, and it will cost you absolutely nothing. Gear (which includes pads and helmets) will be free if you make the team and there’s also the offer of free English lessons should you need them – and sportsmen often seem to.
According to the team’s General Manager, Nathaniel Jones, “The head coach is looking for players with the athleticism and courage to play this sport but also the dedication to be a part of the team for the entire season and with a clean record to allow them to travel to the US.” If that’s you then you should be rushing to Solana tonight
If your days in the end zone have ended you can still be involved as it’s not just players that they are hoping to recruit. They are also looking for experienced players and coaches to fill roles as assistant and special teams coach.
If you want to be on the plane then get down tonight. You’ve got enough time to watch Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday beforehand.
