PS We Ate You: What We're Eating in August 2012

PS We Ate You is a regular magazine column where, every month, we shine a spotlight on some of the most delicious dishes we’ve stumbled upon recently. Dig in!

pork knuckle and fava bean salad
Sweet Spot, RMB 32
The label actually says “pork knuckle and horse bean salad” but that doesn’t sound nearly as appetizing. Yes, we are pretty much just working our way through the salads at this bakery, as they are delicious and filling at a great price. We suggest you eat this one as a wrap using the included tortillas.

fried wild kale with shiping tofu
Middle 8th, RMB 39
Bitter bites of nutrient-rich wild kale come up against the funk of a mildly fermented tofu. It’s not easy food like french fries, but give it a try and see if you can resist a second bite.

triple meat pizza
Twilight, RMB 80
Salami, prosciutto and chorizo sitting pretty on a flavorful crisp crust make this pizza a must-try on their summer menu. Despite the meatiness, it’s not greasy or heavy at all – we swear. Get it before it’s gone.

gyoza
Invincible Ramen, RMB 18
We’re often disappointed by the potstickers at even the best ramen places, but on our last trip to Invincible’s new Sanlitun location, we couldn’t resist trying again. Boy, did we not regret it. A perfect little row of six dumplings showed up with just the right mix of crunch, juiciness and thin springy dough. Score.

mango pomelo sago pitcher
Ri Chang, RMB 38
Some may argue this is not technically food, but there’s stuff in there to chew, so we’re going with it. Next time you go, lighten up your meal with a big pitcher of this for the table. Drink it all before the ice melts, then order another.

pure fillet steak
The Tree, RMB 115
There’s more to The Tree than pizza and Belgian beers. This steak comes with cucumber and tomato salad and french fries, which makes for a pretty sweet deal.

chicken and camembert pizza
Gung Ho! Pizza, RMB 46/63
When a menu is constantly expanding, things can fall off the radar. This topping was an early favorite when Gung Ho! first opened, but we reminded ourselves why we loved it – booze-soaked berries are a great contrast to some stinky cheese.

beef avocado sandwich
Brussels, RMB 50
Is everyone aware of the extraordinary food deals available here? This sandwich is massive (seriously, the size of your arm) and comes with fries. Even crazier: On Tuesdays, it’s half-price!
